In his first season, the rookie cornerback says his reps have grown since an early-camp absence, and he is adapting to the speed, coverage details and rule differences that come with the position at the pro level.
D'Angelo Ponds’ adjustment to the NFL is being paced by two things: increased playing time as the season has progressed, and a sharper understanding of what cornerback play demands once college fundamentals meet the league’s tighter coverage standards. The Jets’ defensive staff has emphasized the transition, particularly around staying legal as he matches up with receivers.
Ponds missed Indiana’s bye week opportunity in training camp due to a calf strain that kept him from competing during that key development window. When he returned at the start of the season, he initially missed the first two games, before seeing a larger role later.
Against the Miami Dolphins in Week 7, Ponds played 46% of the Jets’ defensive snaps, a workload increase that Jets coach Aaron Glenn pointed to as a confidence builder. Ponds credited both the practice repetitions and game reps for helping him feel comfortable enough to make plays in the defensive huddle and on the field.
Learning the pro cornerback role, Ponds said, has meant shifting his approach to footwork and legality. He described the core difference from college as moving his feet and staying in front without lingering long enough to draw illegal contact, while also adjusting to how long he can mirror before he must give a receiver their space.
Defensively, the coaching staff is also tracking the finer points of the discipline side of the position. Defensive coordinator Brian Duker said Ponds did “a nice job overall,” and singled out the next step as cleaning up penalties.
Ponds also spoke about the environment that comes with rookie learning, noting how the defensive back group has helped him settle in even as they compete in everyday team moments. He specifically referenced building camaraderie through shared activities, and said the “whole DB core” has been supportive since he began his NFL season.
