Jets’ comeback effort falls short in Patriots loss, but the defense’s hustle set the tone in 3 takeaways

New York erased much of a 17-3 halftime deficit, but it could not finish the late comeback against New England at Gillette Stadium. Coach Aaron Glenn and LB Jamien Sherwood pointed to missed opportunities early and an effort-based defensive play that defined the second half.

The Jets took a real step forward in the way they fought back, though they still came up short against the Patriots. New England led 17-3 at halftime, and the Jets responded with a second-half run that cut the deficit, but New York ultimately fell 26-19.

One of the clearest momentum breaks came when the Patriots’ offense stalled on fourth down early in the second half. CB Brandon Stephens broke up a fourth-down pass intended for WR A.J. Brown, forcing a turnover on downs and giving the Jets’ offense another chance.

The offense then answered quickly after the defensive stop. Just three plays later, QB Geno Smith threw a deep touchdown pass to WR Omar Cooper Jr., part of New York’s effort to chip away at the lead while the game was still within reach.

In the third quarter, New York continued to make the game tighter, getting within four points (17-13) after Cooper’s touchdown catch and a 36-yard field goal by K Jason Sanders. The Jets also prevented New England from scoring for stretches in that period, setting up the kind of offensive rhythm the staff said it wants to sustain.

The “hustle play” that Jamien Sherwood described as embodying the team’s identity involved his side of the defense creating extra opportunities. In the third quarter, rookie edge David Bailey forced a fumble by ripping the ball away from New England RB TreyVon Henderson, and Sherwood recovered the first fumble of his six-year NFL career. Sherwood later tied his mindset on the play to belief and effort, saying the Jets have to believe a big moment can happen even when the score changes the pressure.

The Jets’ second-half surge, however, exposed what Glenn said still needs to improve. He acknowledged the team’s short-yardage and two-minute execution, including two turnovers on downs in the first half and a three-and-out after the Patriots scored 10 points in the final stretch of the half to take the lead to 17-3.

Why It Matters

  • This game underscores the Jets’ ability to respond after halftime, but it also highlights why late rallies may not be enough if early short-yardage situations are not converted.
  • The defensive “hustle play” theme matters for New York’s identity, because it directly produced extra possessions that the offense later turned into points.
  • Coach Glenn framed the next steps as execution-focused, with particular emphasis on short-yardage and two-minute sequences that can swing games against strong opponents.
  • The Jets’ schedule turns quickly, with their next game against the Miami Dolphins after this Week 6 loss.
