THE APEX TIMES
A day after Phoenix agreed with starting point guard Collin Gillespie, the Suns kept tightening their guard rotation by bringing back his backup, Jordan Goodwin.
The Phoenix Suns moved quickly in the early stages of their offseason rebuilding of continuity, agreeing to re-sign guard Jordan Goodwin on what has been reported as a three-year, $19 million contract. The deal keeps a familiar piece of the team’s backcourt in place, aiming to preserve the rotation balance that comes with having both a primary ball-handler and a reliable secondary option.
Goodwin’s return matters in part because Phoenix has already been operating from a two-tier point-guard structure. One day before the Goodwin report, the Suns reportedly locked up starting point guard Collin Gillespie, meaning the franchise is not simply chasing talent in isolation. It is keeping the guard roles that define how Phoenix manages pace, spacing, and late-game ball control across different lineups and matchups.
According to the report, the Goodwin agreement comes on the heels of that Gillespie contract, placing both decisions close together in the calendar. The timing suggests Phoenix wanted to prevent a gap in the organizational plan for how the point-guard position will be staffed, especially with the reality that NBA seasons are long and rosters can be reshaped quickly by injuries, performance swings, and opponent-specific game plans.
Goodwin is described in the coverage as part of the Suns’ guard rotation, specifically as the backup to Gillespie. In practical terms, that role typically requires the ability to run the offense when the starter rests, maintain defensive communication in the backcourt, and adjust quickly to the unit he is paired with, whether that means playing with more creators or with a lineup built around movement without the ball. Phoenix’s reported willingness to commit to him for three seasons indicates the team views those responsibilities as central rather than supplemental.
The reported dollar figure, $19 million over three years, frames Goodwin as a valued rotation player rather than a short-term placeholder. For a team trying to maintain internal cohesion, extending a guard who already understands the system can be as important as adding new components, because it reduces the number of variables that have to be learned during training camp and the first stretch of regular-season games.
What to watch next for Phoenix is whether the team uses these backcourt agreements as a foundation for the rest of its roster construction. If the Suns keep continuity at the point-guard spots, that can help them better shape minutes allocation for other perimeter players, since coaches can plan around known quantities for ball-handling duties. It also affects how the team might approach subsequent roster moves, such as additions at wing or frontcourt positions, where the fit can be judged against a stable guard core.
As with any offseason report, there is a practical caveat: contract figures and length must be treated as confirmed only once they are formally released or finalized through official transaction processes. Until that occurs, the most certain elements from the reporting are the reported re-signing of Jordan Goodwin for three years and $19 million, and the proximity to Phoenix’s reported agreement with Collin Gillespie the day before.
