In comments made just after the Western Conference Finals Game 7, Josh Hart described a Spurs weakness that the Knicks believed would matter most when the postseason turned to the NBA Finals.
Moments after the buzzer at Western Conference Finals Game 7, Victor Wembanyama’s reaction reportedly carried the weight of the moment for the Spurs. Yahoo Sports reports that Josh Hart, reflecting on what he and New York’s team noticed in watching San Antonio, identified the team’s most difficult-to-hide weakness as the series picture tightened heading into the Finals. Hart’s point, as relayed in the report, was direct: “They think it’s over.”
What Hart suggested, at least in the way the quote is framed, is less about one highlight play and more about how opponents can read momentum. In postseason basketball, teams are often built around sustaining stretches, but one of the recurring problems for a young or evolving roster is the ability to prevent a perceived “finish line” from showing up on the scoreboard, in offensive possessions, and in defensive communication.
The Spurs’ late-series posture, and Wembanyama’s visible emotion after Game 7, underscore the stakes of the moment. When a team reaches the Final round of the conference and the season is suddenly about marginal possessions, small breakdowns become magnified. Hart’s “fatal flaw” description, as reported, points to a specific psychological and tactical trigger: when opponents believe a game is closing, the Spurs can be more vulnerable than they appear during longer stretches.
For the Knicks, the value of Hart’s comments is that they speak to scouting priorities in a matchup that is supposed to be about execution under pressure. New York’s postseason approach has typically emphasized physicality, half-court defense, and forcing turnovers into offense. In that context, Hart’s framing implies the Knicks saw a window where San Antonio could be rushed into choices they would rather not make.
It is also worth noting the limits of what can be confirmed from the single report. The Yahoo Sports article, based on the excerpt provided, emphasizes Hart’s takeaway rather than laying out a complete statistical or lineup breakdown. Without additional primary documentation from the NBA, the Spurs, or New York, readers should treat Hart’s “fatal flaw” characterization as an interpretive summary of tendencies rather than a quantified claim.
Still, the idea matches a familiar pattern in playoff basketball. A team can have elite talent and creative scoring, yet remain susceptible when it loses composure, rotations slip, or it faces repeated pressure moments late in possessions. If the Spurs were indeed vulnerable to opponents pushing the pace of decision-making, that is exactly the kind of pressure the Knicks would try to sustain.
With the NBA Finals now the title picture, the practical question becomes whether San Antonio can prevent the Knicks’ most effective psychological and tactical pressure from turning into a full possession-by-possession theme. Hart’s comments set the stage for fans to watch whether the Spurs can stop opponents from reaching the “it’s over” moment early, and whether New York can consistently force the Spurs into hurried actions when games tighten.
