Cleveland will turn to a new look in the outfield as Chase DeLauter’s broken rib recovery overlaps with other key injuries, prompting Kahlil Watson’s big league debut.
The Cleveland Guardians are set to add Kahlil Watson to the major league roster, giving the outfielder his long-awaited opportunity for a big league debut. The move comes as the team deals with another disruption to an already thinned offensive group, with multiple outfield and lineup contributors unavailable due to injuries.
Watson’s promotion is driven by a sequence of setbacks that includes Chase DeLauter, who is reported to be dealing with a broken rib and is expected to spend time recovering. Cleveland is also contending with additional IL placements that further affect the team’s middle of the order and everyday production.
Among those listed on the injured list are José Ramírez and Angel Martinez. The combination of a rib injury and the absence of batters in two distinct roles raises the immediate pressure on Cleveland’s lineup construction, especially given how quickly injuries can force managers to shuffle positions, adjust batting order, and rethink late-inning matchups.
For Watson, the call represents a roster and performance reset point. A debut often tests a player’s ability to handle pace, defensive assignments, and at-bats that come with heightened scouting attention. In Cleveland’s case, the promotion also functions as a form of contingency planning, because once an injury wave takes hold, the team must locate at least partial production while regulars are sidelined.
The Guardians’ need is not just depth, but impact. When multiple regulars land on the IL around the same stretch, the margin for empty innings shrinks. Cleveland will have to lean on whatever offensive windows open up, whether that is from the top of the order manufacturing runs, from surviving against tough pitching stretches, or from getting timely extra-base hits from its rotating cast.
What to watch next is how Cleveland deploys Watson. His role in the outfield, the timing of his first starts, and the way the manager balances left-right matchups can shape how quickly the club re-stabilizes its run production. The other critical storyline is the health timeline for DeLauter, because rib injuries can be disruptive well beyond the initial injury announcement.
This situation will be fluid. Until Cleveland confirms more details through official roster updates and related transactions, the full shape of the Guardians’ lineup and the duration of each IL stint may continue to shift.
For now, Watson’s call brings a clear answer to one pressing question for Cleveland: who will take the field and offer at-bats while the roster absorbs the latest injury blows.
