Kalib Spivey commits to Georgia Tech, citing Coach Key’s vision and a role on the edge

The Montgomery (Ala.) Russell standout chose the Yellow Jackets over Clemson, Duke and Maryland, adding another pass-rush option for Brent Key’s defensive build.

Georgia Tech added an early recruiting win up front Monday, landing commitment from 6-foot-1, 235-pound edge rusher Kalib Spivey. Spivey, a standout from Montgomery (Ala.) Russell, picked the Yellow Jackets over Clemson, Duke and Maryland, a final group that put his decision firmly in the hands of a staff trying to stay aggressive in the ACC.

Spivey’s commitment reflects both his attraction to Georgia Tech’s current direction and the level of demand around him. On3 reported Spivey held more than two dozen offers and that the Yellow Jackets emerged as a priority after Georgia Tech extended an offer during January of his sophomore year. From there, the pitch became consistent, with Spivey describing repeated outreach and emphasis on his importance to the program’s recruiting plan.

In interviews published with the commitment, Spivey pointed to the specific way Georgia Tech intends to use him, not just the prestige of the schools he considered. He said he liked the way the staff planned to deploy him off the edge, inside at times, and even rushing from linebacker depth. In the same discussion, he also tied his choice to the larger culture he believes Brent Key is building, saying, “I just love the program that Coach Key is building and I want to be a part of it.”

Georgia Tech’s coaching staff, of course, is not just recruiting for the sake of recruiting. Key is entering his third full season as head coach, taking over permanently in 2023 after serving as interim during the 2022 campaign, according to the school’s official athletics bio. The program’s stated results under Key include 23 wins across his first three full seasons as permanent head coach, along with consistent ACC finishes, framing the staff’s recruiting messaging around an on-field trajectory that has accelerated over the last few years.

Spivey’s relationship map also matters to how this commitment likely plays out on the recruiting trail and in the defensive room. A separate On3 report said Spivey’s official visit came over the weekend to “The Flats,” and that he credited defensive ends and outside linebackers coach Kyle Pope for the connection that helped close the deal. Spivey also indicated he expects to compete quickly for a starting role, adding that he wants the incoming class to be built around championship expectations.

For Georgia Tech, this move is primarily about pass-rush depth and versatility. Edge defenders who can line up as traditional rushers and also function in interior or second-level roles give a coordinator more answers to different offensive looks, especially as teams adapt protections and quickness with personnel packages. The commitment also strengthens a continuing recruitment theme for Georgia Tech, which is trying to keep Alabama talent connected to its program as Key works to sustain recruiting momentum in and around the SEC footprint.

Why It Matters

  • Georgia Tech’s 2027 class gains a versatile edge prospect as the program continues to emphasize defensive impact and role clarity.
  • Brent Key’s coaching identity shows up in recruiting form, with Spivey describing a program-wide push for winning and momentum.
  • A commitment like this can raise competition levels in the defensive front, particularly for edge/inside pass-rush responsibilities.
  • Georgia Tech’s ability to recruit in SEC territory remains a key measuring stick for the staff, and adding a high-profile Alabama edge helps that case.
