Kentucky Humane Society to waive adoption fees for adult pets during “Empty the Shelters” event

The Louisville-based shelter says adoption fees will be waived for dogs and cats over one year old as part of a national promotion.

The Kentucky Humane Society is partnering with the Bissell Pet Foundation to host an “Empty the Shelters” adoption event, during which the shelter will waive adoption fees for all dogs and cats over one year old, according to WAVE.

The event is designed to encourage adoptions of adult animals, which can spend more time in shelters than younger pets, the report said. WAVE also noted that “Empty the Shelters” has helped more than 400,000 pets find homes across the United States and Canada since it launched about a decade ago.

For Jefferson County residents adopting animals during the promotion, the shelter will still charge a local license fee of about $11, WAVE reported. The fee is separate from the adoption fee waiver and is intended to comply with local requirements for animal licensing.

WAVE said the Kentucky Humane Society will offer the fee-waived adoptions to the public until 5 p.m. on the event day. Interested adopters can view animals available for adoption at the shelter’s main campus on Steedly Drive and its East Campus on Lyndon Lane, the report stated.

The Kentucky Humane Society said the adoption promotion is limited to dogs and cats over one year old, meaning younger animals will not be covered by the fee waiver under the terms described by WAVE. The shelter’s selection and availability of specific animals are expected to vary by campus during the event window.

The fee waiver is intended to reduce upfront costs for families considering pet adoption while still requiring licensing where applicable. With adult pets targeted for the adoption discount, the shelter is also directing attention to animals that may otherwise be overlooked as households look for younger companions.

After the event window ends at 5 p.m., the shelter will return to its standard adoption fee schedule unless it announces another promotion, WAVE said. People who want to adopt during the campaign are directed to the shelter’s campuses during operating hours on the event day and to review available animals before submitting adoption paperwork.

Why It Matters

  • The fee waiver can affect how quickly adult pets are adopted by reducing upfront adoption costs for participating animals.
  • The Jefferson County licensing requirement, including the reported $11 license fee, shows how local rules continue to apply even when shelter adoption fees are waived.
  • By concentrating the promotion into a limited time window ending at 5 p.m., the shelter is likely to see a surge in adoption activity during the event hours.
  • The campaign’s stated reach, including more than 400,000 pets finding homes nationwide since launch, reflects a broader effort by shelters and partners to address adoption bottlenecks for adult animals.
  • The dual-campus availability changes logistics for families, who may need to check both locations to see the full range of adoptable pets during the event period.
