Kentucky mourns defensive lineman Nic Smith, who died at 20

Kentucky football announced Monday that sophomore defensive lineman Nic Smith has died at the age of 20. In an official statement, UK Athletics said Smith was both a student and a scholarship football player, part of the Community Leadership and Development program in the Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture, Food and Environment, and a member of the UK Football team. The school asked for privacy for his family, friends, teammates, and others who knew him.

Kentucky head coach Will Stein addressed the loss directly, calling it a “tremendous loss” for the program and university community. The Wildcats said they will continue to support one another and honor Smith’s memory as the offseason continues. The statement also pointed students toward support resources, directing the community to assistance available through the Office for Student Success.

Smith was listed as a defensive lineman on Kentucky’s roster and had been part of the Wildcats’ 2025 recruiting class, joining the program as a redshirt freshman. His player bio identifies him as 6-foot-5 and 282 pounds and describes his size as fitting a 4-technique role. The bio also lists his hometown as Loganville, Georgia, and names his high school as Walnut Grove.

Before arriving in Lexington, Smith earned recognition at the high school level, including All-Region 8-AAAA honors in his junior season, according to Kentucky’s roster biography. The same bio notes that he compiled 58 tackles and 8.0 tackles for loss that year, along with multiple quarterback hurries, sacks, forced fumbles, and a fumble recovery. As a senior, the roster bio says he recorded 40 tackles with 11.0 tackles for loss and 2.0 sacks.

Within the program, Smith was also known by his teammates through his nickname. Kentucky’s football roster lists him as “Nic (Happy) Smith,” and his player bio says his nickname is “Big Happ.” While the Wildcats did not detail on-field usage in the release, he was still at an age where many college players are transitioning from the early developmental stage into regular season roles. That is one of the clearest reasons the loss lands with such weight inside a program that is rebuilding every year through recruiting and development.
