Kentucky seismologist says Paducah-area quake’s timing with tornado warning was coincidental

A 2.3 magnitude earthquake recorded late Tuesday in the Paducah area coincided with an active tornado warning, prompting public questions about whether the tremor had any link to severe weather. Dr. Seth Carpenter, a seismologist with the Kentucky Geological Survey, said the quake occurred near the edge of the New Madrid Seismic Zone and that the timing with the warning was coincidence rather than evidence of any cause-and-effect relationship.

Carpenter said the earthquake was detected as a small event and that the New Madrid Seismic Zone, which spans parts of the central United States, regularly produces earthquakes of various sizes, including events that are noticeable to nearby residents but do not indicate unusual seismic activity. In that context, the seismologist said the most important public response remains following weather alerts issued by emergency management and weather agencies during severe storms.

The quake was reported late at night and was measured at magnitude 2.3, according to the Kentucky Geological Survey seismologist’s account reported by WKYT. Carpenter described the region as one that can experience frequent minor tremors, which means residents can occasionally feel shaking even when no obvious seismic escalation is occurring.

During the same period, a tornado warning was in effect for the area, according to WKYT’s report. The simultaneous occurrence led some residents to associate the shaking with the tornado warning. Carpenter said that association is understandable given the close timing, but he said the available evidence does not support the idea that the earthquake is tied to the storm producing the tornado risk.
