Republican Rep. Kevin Hern entered the Oklahoma Senate primary after Markwayne Mullin’s appointment as Homeland Security secretary and was leading the GOP field in live results reported Tuesday by The Hill.
Republican Rep. Kevin Hern was leading in live results from Oklahoma’s GOP Senate primary Tuesday as voters selected a nominee to replace Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, whose move to the Cabinet created the open seat, according to The Hill’s reporting from the returns. Hern, a congressman from Oklahoma, entered the race after Mullin’s appointment and became the dominant figure in the field, with The Hill describing his campaign as effectively clearing the rest of the GOP contenders. The report framed Hern’s position as the result of both his entry timing and the consolidation of support after Mullin left the Senate.
The primary determines who will advance on the Republican line for the general election in Oklahoma, a state in which the party’s nominee is widely expected to compete strongly in statewide races. The Hill’s live updates indicated Hern’s vote totals remained at the front as returns were counted, though the report did not set out a final certified outcome in the live-stage update.
Mullin’s departure from the Senate created the vacancy that the nominee would seek to fill. With the seat now tied to the next election cycle, the contest is focused on whether Hern can carry forward the Republican hold on Oklahoma’s representation in the U.S. Senate.
The Hill’s account also indicated that Hern’s candidacy aligned with President Donald Trump’s political and personnel priorities, noting that Hern was backed by the administration. The practical effect of the primary, however, remains an administrative and electoral one, centered on nominating the next Republican candidate for the open Senate seat and determining the party’s general-election strategy.
As election officials continue counting and later certify results, the next steps will be driven by the state’s election procedures, including final tabulation, certification of the primary winner, and preparation for the general election ballot. Any formal challenges would follow the state’s applicable deadlines and review processes.
