In reflections shared shortly after New York’s first NBA title in more than five decades, Jalen Brunson captured the strange mix of disbelief and relief that follows a team goal finally met.
The New York Knicks championship has begun to settle into everyday time, but in the words Jalen Brunson used, it still hasn’t quite landed. In a Knicks Bulletin column published by Yahoo Sports on June 20, Brunson described how the farther the moment gets from the moment itself, the more “real it becomes,” a line that reads like the normal psychology of celebration after years of urgency and short runs of joy finally turning into a full, lasting accomplishment.
The headline theme is straightforward: the Knicks won an NBA championship for the first time in 53 years. That kind of long wait does not disappear quickly, even when the trophies are already in hand. The column’s framing treats the early days of winning as a kind of emotional hovering, with the idea that people can keep enjoying the high while the mind catches up to the meaning behind it.
Brunson’s comments matter because he is not just one of New York’s most recognizable players, but also a central decision-maker on offense and a steady presence during tense stretches. In title years, star language often reflects more than mood, it reflects what the group learned about itself under pressure. Brunson’s “unreal” to “real” progression suggests a team that had to keep adjusting the story in real time, from near-miss expectations to the final confirmation of a championship-level finish.
The broader Knicks context is that this is the kind of milestone that reshapes how fans, media, and the organization evaluate the next season. After a title, everything turns from survival to sustain. The questions change from “Can they get there?” to “Can they stay there?” Even if the title itself was won on the floor, the afterglow creates a new baseline, and players tend to feel it as much as supporters do.
At the same time, the column’s tone hints at the human side of winning. When Brunson talks about distance making the experience more believable, it underscores how difficult it is to process a championship while it is still unfolding. The brain often treats extreme events as a sequence of episodes rather than a single, completed achievement, which is why recollection can sharpen only once the calendar moves on.
What to watch next is how the Knicks translate that emotional landing into practical offseason priorities, particularly in how they talk about continuity and improvement. A championship changes expectations inside a locker room. Brunson’s reflections are a reminder that, for players, the work begins right after the celebration, because the next goal starts forming while the current one is still settling in.
