New York, which will pick No. 24, No. 31 and No. 55, is using Barclays Center week to evaluate prospects as it pursues sustained title contention.
The New York Knicks are beginning their draft process in earnest for the 2026 NBA Draft, lining up pre-draft work with two prospects: Alex Karaban and Dillon Mitchell. The workouts are part of a broader evaluation window that will culminate at Barclays Center on June 23-24, when teams will select the next class of NBA players in the annual two-day event.
For the Knicks, the timing matters because the team’s roster construction priorities are tightly connected to the next championship cycle. New York is not starting from scratch, but draft-day decisions can still reshape the depth chart, particularly around the wing and frontcourt rotations that often determine how flexible a playoff lineup can be in late-game situations.
New York’s draft capital this year includes three selections: No. 24, No. 31 and No. 55. Those slots place the Knicks in a range where they can either target a higher-upside prospect who could contribute immediately or choose a more established skill set that fits specific needs within the current rotation.
Karaban and Mitchell’s presence in New York’s pre-draft workout group suggests the Knicks are looking at multiple paths to improve size, shooting and on-court decision-making. In modern roster building, those traits are especially valuable because they influence spacing, match-up flexibility, and how a team can defend without sacrificing offense. The Knicks have reportedly been exploring prospects who fit that general profile, and these workouts are one more data point in that ongoing process.
The Knicks’ draft week routine typically runs parallel to internal team needs. A team with three picks can spread risk, taking at least one player they believe can grow into a bigger role and another who may be closer to rotation-ready. The presence of workout invitations also reflects how teams balance what they see on film, what they learn in live drills, and how prospects perform in front of the specific coaching and scouting preferences of the franchise.
It is also worth noting what these workouts do not guarantee. A pre-draft workout is an evaluation step, not a commitment to select a particular player. Prospects can still slide or climb depending on how teams ahead of them fill needs, and workouts can be informational rather than outcome-determinative if other prospects at similar positions grade out differently closer to the draft.
With Barclays Center hosting the event, the Knicks will also be watching what happens across the league as roster-building trends take hold. If more teams emphasize certain archetypes, that can change the value of New York’s remaining picks and alter how they approach each selection. For New York, the next week is less about one workout and more about maintaining options and positioning for each pick at No. 24, No. 31 and No. 55.
The next watch item is whether New York brings either of Karaban or Mitchell back into the conversation on draft night, either through selection or by using their picks to maneuver for preferred fits. Even if neither player is taken, the workouts still indicate the direction of the Knicks’ scouting priorities as the organization continues its search for the right pieces to support another title-ready run.
