In comments on WFAN New York, Knicks owner James Dolan said the franchise accepted an invitation from the White House, setting up a high-profile visit for the team that captured the NBA title.
New York Knicks owner James Dolan said the franchise will accept a White House invitation following a tense political moment at Madison Square Garden, where Trump drew boos during the team’s run to the championship. Dolan framed the visit as a first-of-its-kind honor for an NBA champion, describing it as a direct follow-up to last week’s on-court moment at Game 3 of the NBA Finals.
Dolan said he received an invitation from the White House and that he and the organization accepted it. He also indicated the Knicks have prior experience inviting the president to events, saying he personally invited Trump to come down for the same finals game that had become a flashpoint.
The comments add a new layer to a postseason that has already merged sports, celebrity, and politics. Madison Square Garden has long been a stage for New York’s cultural and media attention, and Dolan’s decision to emphasize the invitation suggests he views the White House visit as a way to close the loop rather than let the boos define the narrative.
The Knicks’ owner did not provide logistical details in the reporting, including specific timing beyond it being a “visit” tied to accepting the invitation. He also did not spell out how the Knicks plan to handle the political symbolism around the event, beyond pointing to the invitation and the organization’s acceptance.
League context matters here because an NBA champion visiting the White House would be a notable ceremony, particularly for a team whose home arena is repeatedly in the national spotlight. While previous champions across major sports have made White House stops, Dolan’s claim that the Knicks would be the first NBA champions to do so positions the franchise as seeking a distinctive headline heading into the offseason.
For Knicks fans and NBA observers, the visit will likely be read as a statement about tone and unity. It also raises questions about how the team’s leadership wants to present itself publicly after a championship, especially when political controversy is already attached to the Knicks’ marquee moments of the spring.
What to watch next is whether the Knicks and the White House confirm any further details through official channels, including dates, participants, and the format of the visit. Until then, the episode remains anchored to Dolan’s comments on WFAN and the reported acceptance of an invitation tied to the fallout from the boos at Madison Square Garden.
