THE APEX TIMES
Ahead of their second UFC meeting, Japanese flyweight Kyoji Horiguchi says he plans to prove he is still the better fighter nearly nine years after their first encounter.
Kyoji Horiguchi is approaching UFC Vegas 119 with a simple message for Manel Kape: he is not intimidated, and he expects the outcome to reflect the gap he believes still exists between them. In comments reported by Yahoo Sports, Horiguchi framed the rematch as a chance to demonstrate that what happened in their first meeting long ago was not a fluke and that his skills have only sharpened over time.
The fight’s significance is rooted in timing. Horiguchi and Kape’s first UFC confrontation came close to nine years before this rematch, meaning both fighters have spent much of their primes evolving in different directions. For Horiguchi, the central storyline is legacy and consistency, not momentum charts or outside narratives. For Kape, the storyline is opportunity, the chance to turn the clock back and reset a rivalry that has been largely off the radar for most of the sport’s modern era.
Horiguchi’s stated attitude is confrontational but also calculated. As reported, he does not view Kape as a threat that demands unusual caution. Instead, he portrayed the matchup as something he can handle through preparation and execution, suggesting his plan is to bring the kind of control and shot selection that can dictate exchanges in the flyweight division.
UFC Vegas 119, like other events in the promotion’s “Fight Night” rhythm, typically places emphasis on fighters who can make a clear case for their next leap. A rematch between two recognizable names from earlier UFC years carries an added pressure because it invites comparison. Fans and analysts will inevitably measure how both men have adjusted their style across time, and whether any early-career gap has narrowed or widened.
Because this report is primarily a preview of Horiguchi’s mindset, many concrete fight details remain unclear from the available information. That matters for readers who want to separate intention from certainty. In UFC matchups, even when one fighter insists he is “not scared” or expects to be clearly better, the fight itself can still hinge on variables such as distance management, pace, and the ability to stay composed when the opponent’s best moments arrive.
Still, the underlying competitive stakes are easy to grasp. When a fighter emphasizes he remains superior to a specific opponent, it usually indicates an all-purpose goal: win decisively enough to move the conversation toward what comes next, whether that is a higher-profile matchup, a more prominent spot on the UFC’s flyweight picture, or simply re-establishing credibility after the passage of years.
What to watch is whether Horiguchi’s approach translates into consistent control early, and whether Kape can force uncomfortable moments that disrupt the rhythm Horiguchi is likely targeting. The rematch also offers a broader test for each fighter’s development: can the older lesson from their first meeting still be applied, or has one of them grown into a more complete answer since then?
For now, the headline is attitude and intent. Horiguchi is promising a measured, confident performance, while Kape will presumably be looking to prove that time has not only passed but has changed the equation. When the two meet at UFC Vegas 119, the sport will get its definitive answer, not just its pre-fight rhetoric.
