LSU’s staff is keeping the pressure on the edge spot as Anthony Sweeney takes an Official Visit with the Tigers, underscoring how quickly recruiting boards can shift in late June.
LSU is continuing to recruit the EDGE position with fresh momentum, with Yahoo Sports reporting that 5-Star Anthony Sweeney has scheduled an Official Visit to Baton Rouge. The visit arrives at a time when fans and recruiting trackers often assume a program’s top defensive priorities are already settled, but in college football, recruiting can move in rapid bursts once a player’s decision window opens.
The story matters for LSU’s defensive planning because EDGE prospects are typically central to both pass-rush development and run defense across the SEC. LSU’s defensive staff under head coach Brian Kelly has leaned heavily on the idea that disruptive pressure can travel from practice to Saturdays, and an Official Visit for a high-end edge target is one of the clearest “we still need you” recruiting indicates a program can send.
Yahoo Sports framed the development as a surprise addition to LSU’s recruiting efforts, noting the involvement of Lane Kiffin and Sterling Lucas in bringing Sweeney on campus. Kiffin’s role as LSU’s offensive coordinator makes this even more notable, because recruiting in college football is frequently collaborative, with key staff members cross-pollinating relationships and recruiting sales across positions even when they do not coach the player’s specific unit.
Sweeney is described by Yahoo Sports as a 5-Star prospect, which places him among the top tiers of recruiting talent. That level matters because the best players do not simply visit, they often compare the “whole package,” including on-field role, development track, and the broader program identity. A high-profile Official Visit therefore indicates that LSU is not viewing Sweeney as a fallback, but as a meaningful target.
For Sweeney personally, the Official Visit is a decision-making checkpoint. While an on-campus visit does not guarantee a commitment, it typically brings the recruiting process into a more concrete stage, with deeper conversations around fit, depth chart projections, and how a player’s skills map to the scheme. What to watch next is whether LSU’s follow-up actions match the intensity implied by the timing of the visit, such as continued engagement after the visit window and any public confirmation of recruiting movement.
For LSU, the next steps are about conversion and positioning. EDGE recruitment can hinge on whether a prospect believes the staff can create immediate opportunity, not just long-term development. If LSU is serious about securing Sweeney, the program will likely emphasize how it plans to use elite pass-rush ability while maintaining a role for rotation and growth, rather than treating the position as a one-person assignment.
