Lauryn Hill received the BET Awards’ Living Legend Icon Award during the 2026 ceremony, ending the night with a wide-ranging on-stage tribute to her career. Billboard reported that Hill accepted the honor following remarks and performances celebrating her work in music and culture.

The tribute featured a roster of prominent artists who appeared during the broadcast in connection with the award moment. Billboard named Doechii, SZA, Doja Cat, Queen Latifah, Nas, Ice Cube, and Wyclef, among others, describing the tribute as a major centerpiece of the event.

After receiving the award, Hill said, “I Want People to Know What We Can Do,” according to Billboard’s coverage of the acceptance moment. The statement was presented as part of her response to the evening’s recognition of her body of work and continuing influence.

The Living Legend Icon Award is positioned by BET as a career-spanning acknowledgment, and the 2026 ceremony framed Hill’s recognition through a collaborative tribute format. Artists covering her musical footprint ranged across generations of mainstream hip-hop and R&B, reflecting the awards show’s focus on legacy and cross-artist acknowledgement.

Billboard’s account also characterized the tributes as “incredible,” underscoring the emphasis placed on performance and public recognition at the awards event. For Hill, the night marked a high-profile return to a major televised platform in connection with a formal career award.

While the broadcast included a long tribute segment, Billboard’s reporting centered on the award’s institutional purpose and Hill’s remarks at the podium rather than on any additional announcements, releases, or policy items. The focus remained on the award presentation and the public-facing recognition of Hill’s influence.

As with other award-show moments, the next steps for audiences and industry viewers are largely tied to the distribution of the televised segment and any related video clips posted by the broadcaster and participating artists, which can extend the reach of the tribute beyond the live program.

Why It Matters

  • The Living Legend Icon Award highlights how major music institutions publicly mark career impact through televised recognition and cross-artist tribute.
  • The event’s lineup shows how mainstream hip-hop and R&B performers are used to connect audiences across generations of listeners.
