LMPD: 8 injured after two-vehicle double rollover crash on I-265 near I-64

Louisville Metro Police reported that eight people were hospitalized after a two-vehicle rollover crash on Interstate 265 on Sunday evening near Interstate 64. The crash prompted a shutdown of traffic in both directions as emergency crews worked the scene and later reopened after the response was completed.

According to LMPD, officers were called to the 24.5 mile marker on I-265 at about 6:50 p.m. after reports of a crash. On scene, investigators said they found a pickup truck and a sedan that had rolled over and become stuck in the highway’s cable barriers.

LMPD’s initial investigation described a sequence in which one of the vehicles was merging into the center lane when it collided with the second vehicle. Police said that collision caused both drivers to lose control, leading to the rollovers and resulting contact with the barrier system.

Emergency crews from Anchorage Middletown Fire and EMS arrived first, according to police. Officials said medics triaged the victims at the scene and then transported them to hospitals for treatment.

WLKY reported that police believe all eight victims suffered injuries that are non-life-threatening. WAVE News similarly said the victims were expected to survive, with the crash occurring on I-265 southbound between I-64 and the Taylorsville Road exit on July 5.

Traffic impacts were significant during the response. Police said all lanes on I-265, northbound and southbound, were closed following the crash as responders worked around the overturned vehicles. Investigators later reported that the lanes reopened after the scene was cleared.

No information was released by police on vehicle occupants’ ages, names, or the circumstances that led to the attempted merge beyond the early description of how the vehicles collided. LMPD did not provide details on whether either driver would face charges, and the investigation remained ongoing at the time of the reports.

Authorities did not report any additional crashes connected to the rollover, but the incident added to a high-traffic risk area along the Louisville interstate system. Motorists are expected to see continued reminders to follow posted lane-control and merging guidance in work and travel lanes, particularly at high-volume interchanges like the I-64 connector.

The Kentucky State Police and other agencies were not reported as involved in the initial response. LMPD will typically continue investigating factors such as speed, roadway conditions, and driver actions after an incident of this type, with findings used to determine whether further enforcement is warranted.
