THE APEX TIMES
The Louisville Metro Police Department chief discussed recent unrest in the Highlands and outlined enforcement efforts, including a push for earlier bar closing times.
Louisville Metro Police Department Chief Paul Humphrey said his agency is increasing enforcement in response to weekend violence and crowd disturbances along Bardstown Road in the Highlands area, according to comments reported by WLKY on June 24, 2026. Humphrey described the unrest as part of a broader pattern of disorder that can escalate quickly when large groups gather around nightlife businesses.
In remarks highlighted by the station, Humphrey focused on the operational steps LMPD has been taking to reduce incidents and manage unruly crowds in the corridor. He discussed the need for patrol presence and enforcement efforts timed to the periods when calls for service tend to spike, particularly around bar and restaurant closing hours.
Humphrey also argued that public safety would improve if some venues shifted closing times earlier. The chief’s proposal was framed as a practical measure to reduce late-night surges in the number of people moving through the area at the same time, a factor he said contributes to more volatile conditions. LMPD has, according to the report, been urging earlier action to help prevent incidents before they begin rather than responding after violence occurs.
The WLKY report placed the discussion in the context of the Highlands weekend activity on Bardstown Road, an area known for entertainment and nightlife. Humphrey’s comments emphasized that enforcement is not limited to making arrests during incidents, but also includes steps intended to deter disorder and limit the ability of crowds to form or grow into disruptive situations.
Humphrey’s remarks included a focus on accountability and coordination. The chief indicated that police are working to address disturbances through targeted enforcement and communications with parties involved in nightlife operations, with the goal of reducing harm to residents, visitors, and businesses along the corridor.
No court actions or formal policy changes were described in the WLKY report, and the station’s summary did not provide specific incident counts, arrest numbers, or dates tied to individual events. The report, however, described Humphrey’s public push for earlier bar closing times as a potential lever LMPD believes could reduce the risk of future disorder.
As Louisville residents and business operators process the chief’s comments, the immediate next steps described in the coverage appear to be continued police enforcement in the area and ongoing discussion about how closing times affect crowd size and public safety outcomes on Bardstown Road.
