With the first four selections expected to fall into place, Los Angeles’ draft strategy at No. 5 could determine how quickly a clutch run of guard prospects turns into the first round’s defining story.
The first four picks in the 2026 NBA draft are widely expected to be settled, but the rest of the first round may hinge on what the Los Angeles Clippers choose to do at No. 5. In a draft class where a wave of guards is expected to populate the early portion of the board, Los Angeles has a narrower decision window than most teams at this stage of the offseason. The premise is simple, but the ramifications are not. If the Clippers take a guard, they may accelerate one identity. If they instead trade down, trade out, or pivot toward a different build, they could reshape how the rest of the first round unfolds.
The Clippers’ position is particularly sensitive because the No. 5 spot sits close to a natural “cluster” of prospects that teams often target for backcourt-forward fit, shot creation, and immediate rotation minutes. When multiple players of a similar type grade out as worthy of top selections, the team that picks first at that tier can both improve its own roster and influence which alternatives remain for the rest of the league. For Los Angeles, that means the decision is not only about who is available, but also about how quickly other teams are expected to spend their capital on the guard options that scouts are circling early.
Even with Los Angeles starting its offseason early, the team’s bigger recent progress point in May has been described as one major win. That matters because draft-day decisions rarely occur in a vacuum. A team can use its momentum to justify a particular direction, whether that is prioritizing a specific skill, betting on a player to contribute immediately, or preserving flexibility through future assets. The challenge for the Clippers is balancing certainty and value, especially when multiple players are likely to fit the broad categories teams want at the top of the draft.
There is also a strategic layer to drafting at No. 5 that goes beyond the name on a jersey. Teams that expect to move quickly through one part of the talent pool can have reason to either stay aggressive or avoid being forced into a compromise selection. If the Clippers believe the most important guard archetypes will still be available later, moving back from No. 5 becomes more attractive. If they believe the best remaining fit disappears soon after, taking the player at No. 5 becomes the cleanest path to controlling outcomes.
For the league at large, the Clippers’ choice at No. 5 also functions as a sorting mechanism. Other franchises can react to Los Angeles’ direction, then adjust their own plans for the next handful of selections. The draft often becomes a chain of responses once one team commits to a position group. In this case, a guard-heavy first-round expectation makes the Clippers’ pick feel like the first domino in a broader positional run.
What to watch next is whether the Clippers treat No. 5 as a “build the rotation now” selection or as a leverage point. If Los Angeles goes guard, the next question becomes which specific traits they prioritize, such as ball-handling, shooting creation, defensive coverage, or playmaking structure. If Los Angeles trades, the immediate follow-up will be how the move changes their ability to acquire value in later picks or other assets. With the first four selections expected to be certain, the No. 5 spot could end up being the difference between a predictable draft and one that turns chaotic fast.
