Louisville Metro Police arrest man accused of assaulting and sexually abusing woman in Portland neighborhood

Louisville Metro Police arrested a man in connection with what authorities describe as a violent assault and sexual abuse of a woman in the Portland neighborhood. The arrest followed a report to police Thursday morning, when the woman told officers she was physically and sexually assaulted by a man who used a metal baton during the attack, according to information described in a WLKY report.

According to the report, the woman was able to escape after the assault and contacted police. When officers arrived, they found evidence at the scene including a baton, broken glass, and what police described as latex gloves. Investigators also said the woman was bloodied when they reached her, and that police interviewed her after she was taken to a hospital.

The report says the woman described injuries that included a broken nose, a jaw fracture, and a cut on her face, along with teeth knocked out. She told police the man hit her with the baton, causing her to lose a tooth, and that he then put her in a “rear naked choke” and struck her multiple times, resulting in additional teeth being knocked out.

WLKY reported that, in statements to police and as reflected in the arrest records described, the woman said the suspect told her, “I’m going to kill you if you keep screaming.” She also reported that during the attack he instructed her to stop fighting and to “let it happen,” including directions to stop yelling and being loud. The report further states that the woman told police she tried to plead for her life, telling him, “just rape me and leave, don’t kill me.”

Police said a witness who was riding by on a bicycle saw what was happening and that the man stopped assaulting the woman when the person approached. The report says the woman told police the suspect told the witness, “this isn’t your business,” while she said she told the witness that the man was trying to kill her.

After the incident, police located the suspect at Norton Hospital, where he was being treated for dehydration and cuts on his foot. The report states that the man, identified in the coverage as Stewart, admitted to hitting the woman with the baton. He now faces criminal proceedings as the case moves through the Louisville Metro Police investigation and the court process, with the allegations not yet tested in court.
