LSU’s Corey Raymond keeps recruiting momentum rolling with commitment from Texas DB “Greedy” James

LSU is still active on the recruiting trail in early July, and the Tigers’ latest move is a statement piece for defensive back coach Corey Raymond. Texas commit Karnell “Greedy” James has flipped to LSU, turning a summer recruitment storyline into a completed addition for the Tigers’ 2027 class.

James, from Manvel, Texas, was recruited by Texas as a safety, but scouts and coaches evaluating his skill set have repeatedly framed him as a natural fit for the cornerback position. Yahoo Sports described him as a versatile defensive back who can play inside and outside, with ball skills and the ability to make plays in space, including punt return production.

On the physical profile, Yahoo Sports listed James at 6-foot-1 and 170 pounds. It also emphasized the traits Raymond and his staff typically prioritize for pressurized, coverage-first corner play, including quick movement in and out of breaks, closing speed, and “excellent vision” as a returner. The same evaluation pointed to a willingness to come downhill and make tackles in the open field, qualities LSU’s defense values for modern perimeter coverage.

The flip matters in a broader context of LSU’s 2027 defensive back recruiting. The Yahoo Sports report characterized LSU and Raymond as having built early interest with other targets as well, including a once-considered favorite at corner, Joshua Dobson. That recruiting battle, according to the report, shifted when NIL became a larger factor for Dobson and LSU and “began to grow apart.” James moving in the opposite direction reinforces that LSU’s staff is willing to adapt targets and press other openings as they appear.

LSU’s class-building also has additional momentum at the position group. The Yahoo Sports report said LSU landed Markez Davis last month, then moved quickly toward its next priorities, naming both Markez Davis and Greedy James as focus areas after LSU’s earlier recruiting plans evolved.
