Market commentator points to Toast and GE Aerospace as long-term “beaten down” opportunities
In a recent Yahoo Finance interview, Miller argued that some stocks with long-term stories are being overlooked, naming Toast and GE Aerospace as examples.
A market commentator on Yahoo Finance said investors may find opportunities in stocks that have compelling long-term narratives but have been “beaten up” or ignored in the current market. Miller highlighted Toast and GE Aerospace during the segment, framing both as businesses with longer-duration themes rather than near-term trading catalysts.
Toast is best known for selling restaurant-focused point-of-sale and back-office tools, alongside payments processing, to help operators run ordering, payments, and inventory in one system. In the segment, Toast was cited alongside GE Aerospace, suggesting the commentator sees long-term value in businesses that can compound even when sentiment cools.
For GE Aerospace, recent reporting provided fresh evidence for the “long-term story” framing. In its first-quarter 2026 results, the Cincinnati-based aerospace propulsion and services company reported total orders of $23.0 billion, up 87% year over year, and total revenue of $12.4 billion, up 25%. Profit was slightly down year over year, but operating profit increased, and cash generation improved, with free cash flow of $1.658 billion, up 14%.
The quarter also underscored why GE Aerospace’s narrative often centers on aftermarket services. Under its Commercial Engines & Services segment, orders totaled $17.3 billion, up 93%, with services rising 49% and equipment increasing more than threefold. The company said services revenue grew 39%, driven by internal shop visit revenue up 35% and spare parts revenue growing more than 25%.
On the defense side, GE Aerospace’s Defense & Propulsion Technologies segment recorded orders of $6.2 billion, up 67%, and revenue of $3.2 billion, up 19%. Propulsion and additive technologies revenue grew 29%, and profit in the segment rose 17% to $379 million, though margins were pressured by mix and investments.
GE Aerospace also linked the quarter to its forward outlook. In the same first-quarter release, Chief Executive H. Lawrence Culp, Jr. said the company has a $170 billion commercial services backlog and that GE Aerospace is “holding” full-year guidance while trending toward the high end given the strong start. The company maintained full-year 2026 guidance ranges, including operating profit of $9.85 billion to $10.25 billion, adjusted earnings per share of $7.10 to $7.40, and free cash flow of $8.0 billion to $8.4 billion.
To provide context for the durability of that services-heavy model, GE Aerospace describes itself as a global aerospace propulsion, services, and systems leader with an installed base of approximately 45,000 commercial and 25,000 military aircraft engines. The company also says its engines and joint venture partners power three out of every four commercial flights worldwide and two of three U.S. military combat and helicopter aircraft.
Still, the Yahoo Finance segment did not lay out new, verifiable fundamentals for either Toast or GE Aerospace beyond the broad argument that beaten-down stocks with long-term stories can re-rate when attention returns. On GE Aerospace specifically, the company’s guidance includes macro assumptions, such as expectations around brent crude oil remaining elevated through part of the year and departing-growth patterns, and it does not assume a global economic recession.
What to watch next for GE Aerospace is whether the company continues to trend toward the top end of its 2026 ranges and whether commercial services backlog strength persists. GE Aerospace has its next scheduled earnings webcast for its second quarter of 2026 on July 16, 2026, which will be a key checkpoint for management’s outlook and the market’s willingness to revisit “ignored” industrial exposures.
Why It Matters
- The segment reflects a broader market dynamic where investors are looking for longer-duration compounders after periods of underperformance or low attention.
- GE Aerospace’s services backlog and aftermarket growth are central to its valuation narrative, so continued backlog momentum can matter more than headline orders in any single quarter.
- If sentiment toward industrial “turnarounds” or “forgotten” mega-caps improves, GE Aerospace could benefit even without a new, specific contract in the near term.
