Toronto’s AHL championship run ended with a 4-3 win over the Chicago Wolves, and several players with ties to Montreal’s organization were on the ice for the Calder Cup celebration.
The Toronto Marlies are the AHL champions, finishing their championship moment the way a playoff run is supposed to: with a one-game, do-or-die result. On Friday night, the Marlies beat the Chicago Wolves 4-3 to win the Calder Cup. For fans tracking Montreal’s player pipeline, the celebration carried an extra layer of significance, because the Marlies roster included former members of the Montreal Canadiens organization.
Yahoo Sports reported that three players who previously developed in the Canadiens system were part of Toronto’s Calder Cup roster. Brandon Baddock, Logan Shaw, and Michael Pezzetta are identified in the coverage as former Canadiens organization members who earned the championship with the Marlies. The Calder Cup is the AHL’s title and, in practical terms, it is also one of the league’s clearest barometers of how well an organization’s depth and prospects can perform under postseason pressure.
The championship game also featured Cayden Primeau, a former Montreal Canadiens goaltender, in the framing of the story. The report notes that if Primeau was on the wrong side of the defeat, other former Canadiens organization players were still able to bring the Cup to Toronto. That contrast is typical of the AHL at its best: development paths can diverge quickly, even when players share common origins in a parent NHL organization.
For the Marlies, winning the Calder Cup as a team underscores how the AHL championship is rarely about a single storyline. It is about consistent line production and defensive structure across a season that ultimately turns into a high-variance postseason. A 4-3 final suggests a game that required answers late, and the kind of composure that tends to show up when younger players have to absorb big moments without losing their game-plan discipline.
Montreal’s broader context matters here because the Canadiens and their affiliates have long used the AHL as a proving ground. Players cycle through to fit organizational needs, and the AHL gives them real minutes against pro competition, not just prospects scrimmaging each other. A title that includes multiple Canadiens-linked players is a reminder that even when a team does not win the NHL’s offseason lottery, development can still translate into playoff-ready performance within the minor-league ecosystem.
The next thing to watch is what happens to the Marlies’ championship roster as it intersects with the NHL offseason. A Calder Cup win often changes how organizations plan for the next season, particularly for players who are on the edge between AHL and NHL opportunities. For Canadiens fans, the question becomes whether the group of familiar names who contributed to Toronto’s title returns to a Montreal path or continues building value elsewhere, and how Cayden Primeau’s and the other involved players’ futures evolve after this postseason outcome.
