Marlins exercise Sandy Alcantara’s $21 million team option for 2027

Miami secured its longtime ace for next season, with a $2 million buyout remaining as part of the contract structure if the club had chosen to move on.

The Miami Marlins exercised Sandy Alcantara’s team option for the 2027 season on Friday, keeping the organization’s veteran right-hander in its rotation on a $21 million price tag.

The arrangement includes a $2 million buyout figure if the Marlins had decided not to bring Alcantara back, but the club confirmed it will retain him for 2027.

Marlins president of baseball operations Peter Bendix, speaking during Alcantara’s season-ending press conference last month, said the organization values Alcantara’s leadership and clubhouse presence as highly as his on-field importance, while declining to speculate at that time about Alcantara’s future.

Alcantara enters the final year of his current deal as a franchise anchor. In his second season removed from Tommy John surgery, he led the majors in innings (214), tied for second in starts (33), and was tied for third in quality starts (21), according to the team’s release.

With Alcantara returning, Miami also keeps options in place at other rotation spots, including Eury Pérez, Janson Junk, Ryan Gusto, and Tyler Phillips (each listed as starters at season’s end), plus All-Star Max Meyer, who missed the final two-plus months with a neck strain. The team also noted Adam Mazur and Robby Snelling are expected back later in spring and early-to-mid season after undergoing elbow surgery in 2026.

Why It Matters

  • Exercising the option keeps the Marlins’ clearest top-of-rotation piece under contract for 2027, reducing uncertainty in the club’s pitching plans.
  • The decision also preserves the team’s development and planning runway for other rotation arms as they navigate returns from prior health issues.
  • Alcantara’s re-signing-by-option approach indicates Miami’s intent to build around a franchise cornerstone rather than letting a premium starter depart on the open market.
