The Facebook parent says it will fund CNIB’s inclusive innovation and career-focused use of AI wearable technology, with Meta also donating AI glasses through a program aimed at helping participants assess workplace opportunities.
Meta says it is partnering with CNIB to help more Canadians who are blind, deafblind, or have low vision explore AI glasses and use wearable technology in everyday life and employment.
CNIB, a non-profit founded in 1918 that supports Canadians impacted by blindness, will receive Meta funding intended to support what Meta describes as inclusive innovation shaped by input from people who use the tools. The company said the goal is to give participants and the broader community a direct channel to influence how AI glasses evolve.
Meta said its funding will support CNIB in four areas, though the company’s release does not spell out all four categories in the announcement text. Meta did highlight one component: donating AI glasses through CNIB’s Come to Work program, which Meta described as putting “tools into the hands” of people exploring employment opportunities.
Meta also said the Come to Work program provides training and practical resources so participants can evaluate how wearable technology can help them secure employment, succeed at work, and pursue their goals. The release positions the program as a bridge between hands-on experience with AI glasses and career planning.
In describing the technology, Meta said people use its AI glasses for tasks such as listening to music, live translation, and hands-free calls. For people who are blind or have low vision, Meta said the glasses can support everyday activities including reading text, identifying objects, and describing the surrounding world to promote greater independence.
Meta’s announcement also ties the partnership to the company’s broader accessibility efforts. It said the company has worked with blind and low-vision communities globally, including donating Ray-Ban Meta glasses to every blind veteran in America through a partnership with the Blinded Veterans Association, and work with Vision Ireland.
CNIB’s CEO Angela Bonfanti said, in the company’s release, that “the best technology is shaped with the people who will use it,” adding that people who are blind, deafblind, or have low vision bring expertise about where barriers remain and how AI glasses can expand choice, freedom, and independence. She said the partnership creates a direct path for that expertise to inform Meta’s work.
Meta’s accessibility vice president Maxine Williams said partnerships like the CNIB effort help get AI glasses to more blind, deafblind, and low-vision Canadians at work and in daily life, and that working directly with the people using the glasses helps the company build products “for everyone.”
