Meta rolls out “Meta Business Agent” to help businesses handle customer chats across WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram
Meta says more than one million businesses already use its AI agent in messaging apps, and it is now expanding availability globally, along with a new platform for building and deploying custom agents.
Meta on Wednesday announced Meta Business Agent, a new AI tool aimed at letting businesses respond to customers in messaging apps “as if they had an infinite team behind them.” The company framed the launch as both a practical customer-support assistant and a broader infrastructure effort, with Meta Business Agent Platform positioned to help larger enterprises build, customize, and deploy agent software at scale.
In the announcement, Meta said the business agent can be set up in minutes or integrated into existing enterprise infrastructure, with the company claiming it can help businesses produce “10X or 100X output.” Meta also tied the product to its messaging footprint, saying more than one million businesses are already using Meta Business Agent on WhatsApp and Messenger to respond around the clock. The company added that there are more than one billion active threads with businesses across WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram every day, and it argued that the scale enables more relevant, personalized experiences from the first interaction.
Meta Business Agent is designed to work inside the flow of customer conversations. The company listed core tasks the agent can perform, including answering questions specific to a business, making product recommendations from a business catalog, booking appointments and qualifying incoming leads, and closing sales. Meta also said businesses can decide when a human team member steps in to provide support, which is intended to keep complex requests within human control.
Beyond direct customer replies, Meta said the agent can function as a kind of internal assistant for business operators. Because the agent responds to customers, Meta said it can also deliver a morning briefing that catches a business up on chats missed overnight and provides insights based on a business’s threads.
For availability, Meta said it is starting with a select number of businesses across the WhatsApp Business app, Instagram Pro, Messenger, and Meta Business Suite, with further expansion planned. In future stages, Meta indicated the agent’s capabilities could broaden from customer-facing support into operational work, including market research, surfacing product insights, connecting with calendar-management tools, and providing competitive intelligence. Meta said interested businesses can join a waitlist.
The company also said it is expanding Business Agent to Instagram. Meta stated that businesses can activate Business Agent on Instagram for free, and that paid subscription offerings will become available in the coming months, with options for companies of different sizes. The company emphasized that the agent can respond in customers’ local languages and in a business’s tone.
To support businesses that want more than a single assistant, Meta introduced Meta Business Agent Platform. Meta described the platform as an “agentic platform” for the infrastructure needed to build, customize, and deploy Business Agents at scale. The platform is designed to connect to a growing suite of hundreds of systems, naming e-commerce and support tools such as Shopify, Zendesk, and Shopee, so agents can take action on behalf of the business.
For larger organizations, Meta said the platform includes enterprise-grade controls, guardrails, and measurement features, allowing businesses to define rules for how an agent should behave and how personalized experiences should be delivered. Meta also said the platform works alongside Meta’s WhatsApp Business Platform for WhatsApp users and supports Messenger and Instagram as well.
Meta also outlined a discovery feature meant to drive incoming chats. It said that “soon” people will be able to find businesses powered by a Meta Business Agent in WhatsApp by typing the business name into a Search bar, or by sharing the business’s phone number or contact card in chats. The intent is that when customers reach out, they receive quick, helpful responses.
Some details remain unaddressed in Meta’s announcement. The company did not provide specific pricing for the paid subscriptions that are expected to arrive in the coming months, nor did it describe the precise geography-by-geography rollout timeline for global availability. It also did not share performance benchmarks for the claimed “10X or 100X” output improvement, nor did it detail how accuracy, safety, and policy compliance will be handled in edge cases. Those questions are likely to matter to businesses evaluating whether the agent can reliably deflect common questions while still escalating appropriately to human staff.
Looking ahead, the main things to watch are uptake as more businesses move from pilot use to broader deployment, the structure and cost of upcoming subscription tiers for Business Agent on Instagram, and how quickly the platform’s integration ecosystem expands beyond the initial named systems. The rollout also increases the stakes for Meta’s guardrails, since the more an agent can take action, the more important it becomes that businesses and customers trust it to behave as intended.
Why It Matters
- It indicates Meta’s push to expand from social discovery and advertising into AI-assisted commerce and customer service inside its messaging properties.
- If widely adopted, agents like this could reduce response-time bottlenecks for small and mid-sized businesses while standardizing customer experiences.
- The Business Agent Platform suggests Meta wants a larger piece of the enterprise AI workflow, not just the customer chat.
- The global rollout and monetization through subscriptions could strengthen Meta’s revenue mix, but hinges on the agent’s reliability and governance.
- Discovery features on WhatsApp could further concentrate business communication within Meta’s ecosystem, increasing competition among business chat experiences.
