Meta rolls out Muse Image, bringing AI image generation into Meta AI and new Instagram and WhatsApp tools
Meta says its first image-generation model from Meta Superintelligence Labs, Muse Image, is now available through Meta AI, with new creative effects for Instagram Stories and AI image generation in direct chats on WhatsApp in limited countries.
Meta is rolling out Muse Image, the company’s first image generation model from Meta Superintelligence Labs, and placing it inside Meta AI as a “creative partner” for turning photos and simple prompts into downloadable visuals. The release is the latest step in Meta’s effort to make generative AI a day-to-day tool across its apps, not just a standalone experiment. Meta also said the model will power new creative features in Instagram and WhatsApp, and will later become available through ads and agencies via Advantage+ creative.
In the company’s announcement, Muse Image is positioned to work from either user prompts or existing images. Meta describes using an uploaded photo and instructing Muse Image to “restore” it to modern quality, then reimagine the same scene in a range of styles. The examples shared by Meta include transforming a photo into an editorial film look, generating a classical Renaissance portrait painting that preserves the subject’s likeness, and producing highly stylized variations such as claymation, clay figurines, 16-bit game characters, and other themed renderings.
Meta says Muse Image is designed to preserve the subject’s core identity and features while still changing the visual style. It also describes “thinking through” prompts first by breaking the work into multiple steps behind the scenes. In Meta’s description, the system pairs with Muse Spark, another model from Meta Superintelligence Labs, to plan layout, look up real-time web context, and blend multiple visual references at once so the final result matches the user’s intent, such as placing a pet into a famous painting or combining a selfie with another image to create a custom postcard.
Meta is also adding new ways to create inside its products. The company said it is introducing more than 30 AI-powered effects for Instagram Stories, along with image generation in Meta AI direct chats on WhatsApp, starting in limited countries with more locations planned. In WhatsApp and other Meta AI experiences, users can describe what they want in conversational language, and Meta AI handles the transformation through Muse Image.
To reduce the friction of getting started, Meta said Meta AI now includes a presets panel with suggested prompts. Those presets are described as one-tap starting points such as restoring old family photos, trying trending hairstyles, or reimagining a user’s image as a claymation character or a 16-bit video game hero. Meta also said people will be able to share what they create across Meta’s apps, including directly to a feed, story, or chat, and that “images” are just the beginning, with Muse Video noted as being in development.
For users who want more control over what appears in the image, Meta described a workflow that includes using @-mentions for Instagram accounts inside Meta AI. In the company’s wording, tagging an Instagram username can bring public photos from that account into an AI-generated image, which Meta frames as useful for collaborative creative concepts, event invitations, or personalized graphics. Meta also said it provides a setting to turn this feature off at any time.
Meta said users can revise and iterate without starting over. Creators can tap a markup icon to circle, sketch, or annotate edits directly on top of a creation. Meta also said the assistant can remember the context of the conversation, enabling users to refine the output by swapping styles, adding elements, or tweaking details.
Beyond consumer use, Meta said it plans to expand Muse Image to more countries and additional surfaces, including Facebook and Messenger, and more areas within Instagram and WhatsApp. Separately, it said that “in the coming weeks,” advertisers and agencies will be able to tap Muse Image through Advantage+ creative, Meta’s advertising toolset for generating and optimizing creative at scale. Meta did not provide additional technical detail in the announcement about how Advantage+ integrates the image model, beyond the availability timing.
Several specifics remain unclear. Meta did not disclose the model’s training approach, limits on usage, whether there are rate limits or content restrictions beyond what is common for consumer AI tools, or how exactly pricing and subscription tiers map to heavier image generation. The company also did not provide a date for full rollout beyond the statement that expanded availability and additional effects will land over time, and that WhatsApp image generation begins in limited countries.
In the near term, the practical test for Muse Image will be whether it delivers consistent identity-preserving edits and reliable style transformations across a wide range of user photos, while maintaining fast turnaround inside chat and story workflows. For Meta, the strategic question is how quickly these capabilities translate into new creator habits and more ad-creative throughput through Advantage+ creative.
Why It Matters
- Meta is pushing generative image tools deeper into its core consumer surfaces, which could increase engagement with Meta AI and lower the barrier for creating and sharing content.
- If Muse Image performs reliably in chat and Stories, it may accelerate the shift toward AI-assisted creation as a routine workflow for social media users.
- By linking Muse Image to Advantage+ creative, Meta is indicating a bid to make AI image generation a standard building block for ad production and optimization.
- The model’s emphasis on preserving likeness and supporting iterative edits could influence competitive positioning in consumer AI tools where identity fidelity and user control are recurring concerns.
