New York scored early and stayed on contact, turning Nick Lodolo’s uneven start into a seven-run outing as the Mets kept the pressure on Cincinnati.
The Mets took advantage of an imperfect start from Reds pitcher Nick Lodolo, converting productive at-bats into a loud offensive night built around singles. In the matchup, New York “pounced” for 10 singles, a number that reflected consistent contact rather than a reliance on a few big swings, and it helped carry the Mets to a Reds loss.
For Lodolo, the theme was familiar: he has the ability to be one of the hardest pitchers for teams to face when he reaches the right rhythm, but he did not find that level on Wednesday. MLB reported that his outing featured enough damage to put Cincinnati in chase mode, and the damage ultimately became too much to overcome.
The scale of the problem showed up in the basic stat line described by MLB. Lodolo allowed seven runs in the loss, and while the story centered on New York’s ability to string together hits, it also referenced hard contact and home-run damage as part of what the Reds had to absorb. That mix matters because it means the Mets did not just “get a few” hits, they produced through multiple paths.
The Reds offense, meanwhile, could not flip the game quickly enough to neutralize the Mets’ momentum. When a starter gives up a chunk of runs early or in waves, the bullpen workload rises and the margin for error tightens, especially for an opponent built to make pitchers throw sequences rather than surrender one at a time.
What made the Mets’ performance stand out was the way the hits clustered into sustained innings. Ten singles implies New York was winning many of its plate appearances by finding gaps and staying off the ultimate mistakes that lead to extra-base damage. It is often a sign of approach and quality contact, even if the exact breakdown of innings and line drives is not the point of the report.
Cincinnati, for its part, will care most about Lodolo’s next start and whether he can return to the sharp, rolling form suggested by MLB’s description of his potential “vintage performances.” A pitcher can look close even when results go the wrong way, but after a seven-run outing, the Reds will want to see better command and sharper execution to limit the number of at-bats that become rally opportunities.
For New York, this is the kind of game that can build confidence for an offense over a full series. Sustaining pressure with singles often means the lineup is doing multiple things right at once, making it harder for pitchers to rely on one pitch to erase an inning. The key test now is whether the Mets can carry that contact quality forward against Cincinnati’s next opposing starter and game plan.
Next up, the storyline remains simple: can Lodolo turn the lesson of this uneven start into a rebound performance, and can the Mets keep manufacturing offense when the opponent adjusts. In a season shaped by thin margins, the follow-through on how both teams respond after a pitching swing-and-miss is usually what separates one result from a trend.
