After acquiring Freddy Peralta from Milwaukee, New York’s baseball operations leadership framed the assignment as more consistent, top-of-rotation pitching rather than a single, one-off performance.
Freddy Peralta’s latest start left the Mets grappling with the same question that follows every high-upside starter acquired for a deeper, steadier rotation: can he be a true No. 1 at the moments that define the stretch run. The issue surfaced in Philadelphia, where Peralta surrendered 10 earned runs, a career high, in a loss that reinforced how fragile “ace” expectations can be when a pitcher is not locating his best work.
Peralta’s situation matters for the Mets not just because of the damage in one game, but because New York brought him in with the kind of profile that traditionally sits at the top of a rotation. He arrived from the Brewers last offseason, and the assumption that comes with that move is that the right-hander can provide innings and high-leverage starts that stabilize the staff when opponents start to press.
In the aftermath, Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns addressed the broader bar the organization has set. When asked whether the Mets needed Peralta to be an ace, Stearns pointed to the reality of pitching development across a career, saying the Mets have multiple starters who at various points have pitched “as” an ace. The quote reflected a team-building approach, where ace traits are expected to show up through form, execution, and role clarity, rather than being defined by one label permanently attached to one pitcher.
Peralta’s outing in Philadelphia highlighted why that distinction is important. Allowing a career-high 10 earned runs is not merely a blip in performance, it is a report that command and damage control were missing in a way that a front-line starter is expected to prevent. The Mets now have to weigh what they believe the underlying issue is, and whether adjustments can restore the version of Peralta that looked like a rotation cornerstone when the acquisition was made.
From a roster perspective, the Mets’ need extends beyond Peralta’s personal bounce-back. A top-of-the-rotation starter is typically the anchor around which the rest of the staff is protected, including how often younger arms get to pitch with a lead and how the bullpen is managed on the days when the schedule tilts toward must-win outcomes. When a starter struggles that badly, it changes workload and sequencing for the next few turns, which can ripple through both the rotation plan and bullpen usage.
What to watch next is not just whether Peralta avoids another disastrous line, but whether the next start shows more repeatable fundamentals: the ability to attack hitters with his preferred plan, to limit hard contact at the start of counts, and to keep the game from getting away before late innings. If the Mets see the same kinds of problems persist, then the “multiple starters at various points” philosophy will be tested. If they see the performance drift back toward what made the acquisition make sense in the first place, then this outing can be treated as the outlier that the organization was always hoping it would be.
