Microsoft touts Majorana 2 topological quantum chip, citing 1,000x more reliable qubits

The company says its next-generation processor improves qubit longevity and reliability using new materials, plus “agentic AI” from Microsoft Discovery, while analysts frame the move as additional validation for the quantum industry.

Microsoft has unveiled Majorana 2, a next-generation topological quantum chip designed to make qubits more reliable and easier to scale. The announcement focuses less on adding more qubits and more on improving qubit performance, with Microsoft saying the new design achieves a 1,000-fold reliability improvement versus its prior generation.

In Microsoft’s description, Majorana 2’s qubits can maintain their quantum state far longer than standard approaches, with a mean qubit lifetime of 20 seconds and some instances lasting as long as one minute. Microsoft contrasts that with other measurement methods in which qubit “lifetime” is often discussed in microseconds, and it ties the longer lifetimes to the goal of more dependable computation.

Microsoft also attributes part of the progress to its Discovery platform for scientific research and development. In the company’s account, Microsoft Discovery uses “agentic AI” to help run scientific workflows that can span experiment planning, measurement, analysis, and iteration, with engineers describing how AI agents can accelerate optimization and help manage complex, interconnected parameters across the quantum stack.

At the hardware level, Microsoft says Majorana 2 improves the materials stack used for its topological qubits. In particular, it replaces the earlier design’s aluminum-based superconductor with lead, and updates the semiconductor “active region” to a combination of indium arsenide and indium arsenide antimonide. Microsoft’s technical blog further describes the qubit architecture in terms of “tetrons,” which it says are built from two superconducting nanowires with Majorana Zero Modes at their ends, using parity-based measurements as a core control mechanism.

The company says the reliability and speed gains are meant to support a roadmap toward a scalable quantum computer. Microsoft now expects to achieve a scalable quantum computer by 2029, cutting an earlier timeline in half, and it frames Majorana 2 as a step toward commercially valuable, fault-tolerant quantum computing.

Outside commentary, including a note reported by Barchart, echoed the idea that Majorana 2 is incremental progress toward a more convincing platform. Wedbush is described as calling the development “another validation” for the broader industry, implying the market narrative increasingly depends on repeated hardware demonstrations rather than one-off headlines.

Still, Microsoft has not disclosed in these materials any detailed system-level results that would let outside observers independently gauge how the chip performs inside error-correcting routines at scale.
