MLB Pipeline’s top 17-year-old prospects: Who are the seven best right now?

Luis Hernández tops the list of MLB Pipeline’s best prospects in the 17-year-old age bucket, with rankings led by teenagers from six organizations.

MLB Pipeline’s latest Top 100 Prospects update includes a tightly focused group: the seven best players who are 17 years old in pro baseball’s prospect ecosystem. MLB noted that youth is especially concentrated near the top, with 17 of the Top 25 not yet legally able to drink in the U.S. (under 21) and eight of those players being teenagers.

At No. 1, MLB Pipeline ranked Giants shortstop/third baseman Luis Hernández as a 17-year-old, identifying him as the top international signee in the 2026 class. MLB said Hernández has already moved quickly through the Arizona Complex League and made a brief early-season appearance with Single-A San Jose.

The list continues with Phillies outfielder Francisco Renteria at No. 2. MLB reported Renteria’s strong production profile in the minors, including leading qualified Minor Leaguers in OPS and slugging while showing a plate approach that included a walk rate nearly matching his strikeout rate.

Royals outfielder Angeibel Gomez placed No. 3. MLB reported that even with his youth, Gomez held his own against older competition and that his performance included a top-three finish among qualified Minor Leaguers in DSL OPS and a slugging line that supported an eventual center-field outlook.

Angels outfielder Jared Grindlinger came in at No. 4. MLB said Grindlinger reclassified into the 2026 Draft and that the organization intends to develop him as an outfielder after his signing, with an emphasis on refining his current hit-over-power profile from the left side.

Astros shortstop/third baseman Albert Fermín was ranked No. 5. MLB described him as the top switch-hitter in the 2026 international class and said he combines advanced barrel feel with pitch recognition, adding that questions for his projection center on how any future physical growth may affect both speed and power usage.

Mets shortstop Wandy Asigen checked in at No. 6. MLB attributed part of his pro timeline to a hamstring injury and said that when he returned, he produced elite power numbers in the DSL, while also noting contact and strikeout rates in a limited sample.

Rounding out the group at No. 7 was Cardinals shortstop Rocco Maniscalco. MLB reported that he reclassified into the 2026 Draft and earned late first-round money, and it highlighted his shortstop defense, including smooth actions, arm strength, and baseball IQ.

MLB also listed three additional 17-year-olds as honorable mentions: Reds shortstop Angel Nuñez, Marlins infielder Santiago Solarte, and Nationals outfielder Samil Serrano. MLB’s framing emphasized that while age and tools are important, early success is never guaranteed in prospect development.

Why It Matters

  • This list is a quick snapshot of where MLB Pipeline sees the most impact upside among the youngest eligible prospects.
  • The rankings highlight how organizations are balancing immediate tools and long-term projection when developing players who are still near the start of their pro experience.
  • For fans tracking future talent, the 17-year-old bucket is often an early indicator of which scouting pipelines are producing elite skill sets.
  • Because age buckets can skew toward international signees and recently drafted reclassifiers, it adds context to why certain organizations feature multiple names in similar prospect tiers.
