THE APEX TIMES
Los Angeles’ offseason moves around edge pressure raise a simple question for fans and analysts alike: how much of the improvement is measurable, and how much is schematic leverage built for the next script of games?
The question hanging over the Los Angeles Rams’ defense after the Myles Garrett trade is not whether Garrett changes the ceiling. It is whether the upgrade can be cleanly seen in the way opponents respond and the way Los Angeles chooses to deploy pressure on a weekly basis. In a league that now prizes disguise, matchup-specific blitzes, and tempo-related pressure, the most immediate impact may be subtle: a defense that no longer needs certain coverage-and-blitz compromises to function.
Yahoo Sports framed the offseason conversation around the same tension that often follows a star acquisition. “Casual observers” will likely ask how much better the Rams actually get after gaining Garrett and trading away Jared Verse, and the piece suggests there is a schematic shift at work that may not show up in a single box-score category. The Rams’ challenge will be translating star power into repeatable, game-planning advantages rather than relying on one-off moments.
From a football logic standpoint, an elite pass rusher can affect more than pass rush production. It can change protection calls, alter the timing of quarterbacks under pressure, and force offenses to account for one threat so thoroughly that it can simplify decisions for everyone else. The crux of the Rams’ situation is that Garrett’s presence may reduce the need to “manufacture” pressure with stunts and complex timing patterns, allowing Los Angeles to keep more bodies available in coverage or to pressure with cleaner routes to the quarterback.
That theme of pressure philosophy is where the Rams’ prior identity matters. Yahoo Sports noted that the Rams led the NFL in “stunt rate” in 2025, describing those movements as a kind of crutch the defense may not require in the same way once Garrett is on the roster. Stunts can create confusion, but they also carry risks: when the timing is off, the defense pays with unblocked gaps or incomplete reads. If the Rams can reach similar results with fewer variables, the benefit is not only statistical, it is operational.
At the same time, it is reasonable to expect the Rams to retain portions of what worked. Even with a player like Garrett, elite teams rarely abandon everything that produced success. They adjust, they blend, and they add new constraints for opponents. Los Angeles could still use stunts selectively, but perhaps with a different purpose, such as amplifying Garrett’s one-on-one win potential or aligning pressure packages to specific offensive formations rather than leaning on volume-based movement.
The Jared Verse part of the equation also shapes the conversation, even if the precise impact is unclear from the available information. Trading away a homegrown piece of the edge rotation means Los Angeles has to replace more than snaps. It means replacing roles, responsibility levels, and how quickly the front can execute pressure calls under live-fire conditions. Those are hard to capture without season-to-season data, even if Garrett’s talent provides an obvious focal point.
For Rams fans, the most practical “what to watch” is how Los Angeles calls pressure in different game states. Do they create advantages with simpler rush designs, or do they keep asking edge rushers to do the same stunt-heavy work? Do offenses show different protections and quick-game behavior when Garrett is on the field, and does the rest of the defense benefit from those changes? The answers will determine whether the trade reads as a clean improvement or as a shift in the kind of pressure the Rams can sustain.
Ultimately, the value of a Garrett-type acquisition may be strongest in games where the difference is not the number of sacks but the number of second-guess throws, the number of third-and-long conversions the defense prevents, and the way the Rams shape the opponent’s entire plan. If Los Angeles can reduce complexity while keeping pressure efficient, the improvement will look less like a single leap and more like an upgraded operating system for defense.
What to watch next is also straightforward: how new coordinator decisions map to actual defensive looks, and whether the Rams’ pressure changes show up in opponent passing behavior quickly, or only over time as roles settle.
