Washington adds a 25-year-old middle-infield option from the San Francisco Giants, sending left-hander Tony Neubeck in the exchange, while also clearing a roster spot via a DFA of Richard Lovelady.
The Washington Nationals acquired infielder Nate Furman from the San Francisco Giants in a trade completed Sunday, according to an MLB announcement. The teams exchanged left-handed pitcher Tony Neubeck for Furman.
In a separate roster move from the same announcement, Washington designated left-handed pitcher Richard Lovelady for assignment. The DFA indicates the Nationals opened up a path to remove Lovelady from the active roster, though the outcome of that process was not detailed in the release.
Furman, 25, produced at Triple-A Sacramento in 2026 with a.293 batting average, 25 doubles, one triple, seven home runs, 48 RBI, 52 walks, 19 stolen bases and 63 runs scored in 102 games, the team said. He also made his Major League debut with San Francisco on Aug. 1 and appeared in 22 games with the Giants, including eight starts at second base.
At the plate in his first big league action, Furman totaled four hits, three RBI, five walks and two runs scored while making those eight second-base starts, Washington reported. Across four minor league seasons from 2023-26, the release said Furman has recorded more walks (169) than strikeouts (166) and owns a.292/.400/.404 slash line.
The Nationals also pointed to Furman’s profile in the Giants organization, noting that prior to 2026 he was cited by Baseball America as having the “Best Strike-Zone Discipline” in San Francisco’s system.
Furman was a fifth-round pick in the 2022 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. San Francisco acquired him on Aug. 26, 2024, from that draft pool by bringing him in as the player to be named later in exchange for right-handed pitcher Alex Cobb, according to the announcement.
