NCAA expands March Madness to 76 teams in 2027, adding a new “Opening Round”

Starting with the 2027 Division I men’s and women’s basketball tournaments, the NCAA will grow both fields from 68 to 76, replacing the First Four with 12 Opening Round games.

The NCAA has approved a major expansion of the Division I men’s and women’s basketball tournaments, growing each bracket from 68 teams to 76 starting in 2027. The first wave of the expanded tournament will be branded the “March Madness Opening Round,” moving the sport closer to win-or-go-home basketball even earlier in the week than the traditional First Four era.

In practical terms, the Opening Round becomes the new entry point for the eight additional teams in each tournament. After those games are completed, 64 teams will remain to play the standard Round of 64, preserving the familiar progression from there to the Round of 32, regional sites, the Final Four and the championship game. The NCAA said regular-season and conference championship schedules are not expected to change.

For the men’s tournament, the Opening Round will be played on the Tuesday and Wednesday after Selection Sunday, with the 2027 event beginning March 16. Instead of two games per night in Dayton, the NCAA’s plan calls for three games each day in Dayton and three games each day in a second host city, which will be determined. For the women’s tournament, Opening Round games will take place Wednesday and Thursday, March 17-18, on the campuses of 12 of the top 16 seeds selected to host, continuing the trend of women’s early-round hosting in recent years.

The Opening Round will feature 24 teams in each tournament, arranged as 12 games per field. Half of those teams will be among the 12 lowest-seeded automatic qualifiers on the committees’ overall seed lists, and the other half will be among the 12 lowest-seeded at-large teams. The NCAA also said teams will generally be paired against the closest opponent on the overall seed list, with exceptions possible for factors such as avoiding a regular-season rematch or for geographic considerations. As an example of the pairing logic, the NCAA noted that a seed such as 75 could face seed 76 in one Opening Round matchup.

Beyond the bracket mechanics, the NCAA framed expansion as both an access and an investment move. It projected that the additional tournament participation will result in more than $131 million in new revenue distributions to member schools over the remaining six years of NCAA broadcast agreements, after expenses, with the surplus primarily aimed at continuing investment in the basketball championships. The NCAA also pointed to increased basketball fund units for schools and noted that it expects the broader corporate partnership environment to expand, including newly opened product categories within the NCAA Corporate Champions and Partners Program.

For teams and conferences, the most immediate impact will be the altered path to the Round of 64. The NCAA said the Opening Round format will create opportunities for additional automatic-bid teams to play at least two March Madness games, and it highlighted that, under the previous structure, fewer teams had that chance. It also argued that the expansion should change the odds of the late-seed lines producing instant losses, citing that men’s and women’s teams seeded 15 or 16 were winless in first-round games in each of the last two tournaments and claiming that nearly half of the 28 teams seeded on those lines will win at least one tournament game going forward.

What to watch next is how the committees manage the overall seed list, since the Opening Round matchups are built from the same seeding logic that determines who meets whom later. For coaches, the bigger question is not whether the Round of 64 still matters, it does, but whether being on the bubble of the 64-team field now comes with a different kind of preparation curve, one that includes an extra do-or-die week earlier in the calendar. The NCAA’s expanded format begins with the 2027 tournaments, so the real test of the new structure will come during Selection Sunday and the first weeks of March Madness next year.

Why It Matters

  • More teams reach March Madness, which the NCAA said increases championship access while preserving the traditional Round of 64 and later rounds.
  • The Opening Round shifts high-pressure basketball earlier, changing how bubble teams plan for Selection Sunday and the first week of the tournament.
  • The added games create additional revenue distributions and increased investment indicates for men’s and women’s basketball programs.
  • The automatic-bid portion of the field remains central, but the NCAA says more conferences get the chance to play at least two tournament games due to the new structure.
