NCAA releases official 2027 March Madness printable bracket and schedule for expanded 76-team field

The Division I men’s tournament will add an Opening Round before the traditional 64-team First Round, with games beginning March 16 and culminating April 5 at Ford Field.

The NCAA has published an official printable bracket and schedule for the 2027 men’s NCAA Division I tournament, the first March Madness to feature a 76-team field. While the expanded tournament adds more teams to the first week, the core structure that leads to the Final Four remains intact: after the additional early games, the field is set to return to a 64-team format for the familiar First Round rhythm.

What changes most is the front end of the bracket. Beginning with the 2027 championships, the men’s tournament grows from 68 teams to 76, adding eight teams. The “First Four” concept is replaced by a larger Opening Round that consists of 12 games played across the Tuesday and Wednesday after Selection Sunday.

In practical terms, the Opening Round becomes the new gateway to the standard bracket. NCAA materials explain that the Opening Round will involve 24 teams, made up of the 12 lowest-seeded automatic qualifiers and the 12 lowest-seeded at-large teams on the committees’ overall seed lists. Those 12 games reduce the field back down so that, once the Opening Round is complete, 64 teams remain for the First Round.

The calendar locks in an early start for the 2027 men’s tournament, beginning March 16. The NCAA’s published future site plan shows the Opening Round games running March 16-17 at the University of Dayton’s UD Arena, with a second Opening Round host site listed as “TBD.” After that, the traditional 64-team First Round and Second Round are scheduled across multiple campus arenas, with different cities hosting different days within the NCAA’s set March 18-21 window.

For the first campus-based weekend after the Opening Round, the NCAA’s future site list includes Charlotte’s Spectrum Center (March 19 and 21), Duquesne University’s PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh (March 18 and 20), and the Target Center in Minneapolis under the University of Minnesota (March 18 and 20). It also includes Creighton’s CHI Health Center in Omaha (March 18 and 20), the KFC Yum! Center in Louisville (March 19 and 21), and the Dickies Arena in Fort Worth (March 18 and 20).

On the bracket’s regional stage, the NCAA’s future site plan keeps the regional weekends in late March. The East Regional is scheduled for March 26 and 28 at Madison Square Garden in New York, while the Midwest Regional is set for March 26 and 28 at T-Mobile Center in Kansas City. The South Regional is planned for March 25 and 27 at the Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, and the West Regional is also scheduled for March 25 and 27 Arena in Los Angeles.

The tournament’s final weekend remains anchored in Detroit. The NCAA lists the Men’s Final Four dates as April 3 and April 5 at Ford Field, with the national championship game set for Monday, April 5, as the tournament closes out its run. As always, the bracket pairings and seeds come after Selection Sunday, but the sites and the expanded early-round structure provide a clearer map for programs planning for the first two weeks of March.

Why It Matters

  • Expansion changes who gets a realistic shot at a second-week run, with more teams entering the tournament before the traditional 64-team bracket begins.
  • The Opening Round adds high-stakes games immediately after Selection Sunday, meaning more programs can potentially be pulled into the national spotlight during the first week of March Madness.
  • While the early format grows, NCAA materials emphasize that the rest of the tournament calendar and the familiar path to the Final Four remain unchanged, preserving the event’s overall rhythm.
  • For coaches and athletics departments, the bracket’s structure now includes an extra on-ramp, which can affect travel, preparation, and how teams build their postseason momentum heading into March.
