Netflix tallies 15 wins at the Canadian Screen Awards, spotlighting North of North and Wayward
The streaming company said its Canadian slate earned 32 nominations at the 2026 Canadian Screen Awards, while partnering with the ceremony on a “Photo Suite” set inside a vintage passenger train.
Netflix marked another awards milestone tied to Canadian production at the 2026 Canadian Screen Awards, saying its titles won 15 awards. In a post dated May 31, 2026, the company described the recognition as part of a broader push to elevate Canadian film and television for global audiences.
Netflix said its local slate received 32 nominations, and it totaled 39 nominations across all Netflix titles. The company also pointed to North of North as its leading contender, citing 20 nominations for the series. Wayward, another Netflix title, received Spotlight Award wins in two categories, which Netflix highlighted as a central outcome of the night.
The company’s winners list included North of North taking Best Comedy Series, along with performance and craft awards such as Best Lead Performer, Comedy for Anna Lambe and Best Ensemble Performance, Comedy. Netflix also named Maika Harper for Best Supporting Performer, Comedy, Tanya Tagaq for Best Guest Performance, Comedy, and Zoe Hopkins for Best Direction, Comedy.
Netflix’s awards also extended beyond North of North. The company said Wayward won Spotlight Award for Best Series and Spotlight Award for Best Writing, while Who Killed the Montreal Expos? earned the Barbara Sears Award for Best Editorial Research and also won Best History Documentary Program or Series. For animation, Netflix cited Unicorn Academy for Best Sound, Animation.
To mark the moment, Netflix said it partnered with the Canadian Screen Awards on a Photo Suite designed to reflect what it called the journey of Canadian stories over the past year. The company described an invitation for Canadian talent across film and television to step aboard a vintage-inspired Canadian transcontinental passenger train, where guests encountered a life-sized set with props, ambient lighting, wood paneling, and a bar area featuring classic drinks.
The Canadian Screen Awards are administered by the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television and are presented to recognize achievement across Canadian film, television, and digital media. In the awards structure, Netflix’s mention of Spotlight Awards connects to the Academy’s rules, which describe those categories as recognizing eligible Canadians working on international television series made and broadcast in Canada under specific eligibility requirements.
Still, Netflix’s announcement does not break out how the remaining awards beyond North of North and Wayward were distributed among its other titles, nor does it provide production-level details such as budgets, locations, or behind-the-scenes contributions tied to each win. It also does not quantify audience impact or subscriber effects tied to the ceremony, focusing instead on nominations, awards, and the Photo Suite experience.
Why It Matters
- Awards recognition can strengthen Netflix’s credibility with Canadian creators and industry partners, especially in categories tied to writing, performance, and production craft.
- Netflix’s Spotlight Award wins reinforce how programs made in Canada can be recognized even when the underlying eligibility framework is linked to international series production.
