A look back at the most recent Notre Dame-Stanford meetings underscores how quickly a rivalry can lose its edge when the competitive gap becomes familiar.
Notre Dame’s return to Stanford on the schedule is being treated as an “opponent retrospective” topic in the run-up to 2026, but the renewed attention comes with a complaint that will be familiar to longtime college football observers. In a recent Yahoo Sports feature, the author argues that what used to be a rivalry with real sting has become, in practice, a one-sided exercise that feels less like a battle than a formality.
The piece points to how the matchup has shifted over time, describing Stanford as increasingly uninterested in the old competitive narrative and framing the series as “a stale annual exercise” in which the Irish have repeatedly overwhelmed the Cardinal. The author’s core contention is not that the matchup lacks meaning historically, but that the modern on-field pattern has drained it of the tension that makes rival games matter beyond the calendar.
A key exception, according to the Yahoo Sports account, was the 2022 version of the game. The feature characterizes that meeting as “spicy and spiteful” and tied to then-Stanford head coach David Shaw’s brand of competitive edge, a brief reminder that the programs can still generate something closer to the rivalry fans want to see.
Still, the argument goes, the broader arc has tilted toward predictability. The author describes the current version of the rivalry as “a joke and a bore” for fans who remember when Notre Dame and Stanford were closer in identity and stakes, particularly during the years when Stanford’s physical style and Notre Dame’s national relevance made the matchup appointment viewing rather than scheduled scenery.
For Notre Dame’s perspective, the 2026 Stanford meeting becomes a test of whether the franchise can reclaim intensity from a matchup that no longer naturally produces it. For Stanford, it is the clearest type of opportunity: turn a nationally recognized opponent into a stage for the program’s credibility, not just its participation. The practical question for both schools is whether upcoming roster development and game planning can change the competitive script fast enough to make the rivalry feel alive again.
What to watch next is simple but consequential. If the Cardinal are closer in the trenches early, the series will at least have a chance to produce the momentum swings and late-game tension that make rival history feel current. If not, the storyline described in the Yahoo Sports piece will likely persist, and Notre Dame-Stanford will keep drifting from rivalry to routine.
