THE APEX TIMES
A new preseason look at the Buckeyes argues that multiple offseason and roster-transition factors could blunt the unit’s momentum as Ohio State heads toward August camp.
Ohio State’s defense is getting a cold preseason temperature check, and the central idea is straightforward: the Buckeyes could take a step back in 2026. In a June 18 preview published by Yahoo Sports, Land-Grant Holy Land framed this upcoming season around “biggest concerns,” with the defensive side of the program as the week’s focus.
The premise is not presented as a single problem, but as a combination of reasons working against the unit between now and the start of preseason camp in August. That timing matters, because it places the emphasis on what can be fixed during the offseason stretch, and what might already be locked into place before the first meaningful camp practices.
The article is part of a larger weekly “theme week” format leading into camp. In that structure, the defense is treated as a position unit where preparation, personnel continuity, and fall camp developments will be weighed against what Ohio State has recently asked the defense to do on game day.
For a program built around year-to-year defensive identity, even a modest slide can change the feel of an entire season. Ohio State’s path through its schedule typically depends on sustaining pressure and limiting explosive plays, and a defensive “step back” would inevitably shift the balance toward greater margin of error for the offense and special teams.
Still, it is important to separate preseason framing from confirmed outcomes. A piece written before August camp is meant to highlight potential vulnerabilities, not to document results. Without camp observations, depth-chart clarity, and scheme execution under live looks, the “concerns” are essentially hypotheses about how the defense might perform.
One reason the preseason question is likely to linger inside the fan base is that Ohio State’s coaching and recruiting pipeline sets a high baseline expectation. When a media preview suggests the unit could decline, the debate often becomes less about whether the defense can stop opponents entirely and more about whether it can consistently win the small, repeatable moments that determine third downs, red-zone stops, and game tempo.
The next checkpoint is camp itself. The August practices and early fall stretch will reveal whether the concerns were mostly about gaps in experience and timing, or whether they point to deeper issues that would require more dramatic corrections once the games begin.
If Ohio State’s defense looks sharper in early camp and practices, the “step back” label will read like offseason pessimism. If it struggles to establish the basics, this June debate could become a defining storyline of the season, shaping how the Buckeyes manage tough stretches and respond when opponents find traction.
