THE APEX TIMES
In his third Jets season, Olu Fashanu is focused on building continuity up front and understanding how the offense’s timing and protections fit Geno Smith’s style as the organization absorbs another major coaching transition.
When the Jets look at their offense this offseason, the work starts where the snap is turned into protection, leverage and rhythm. Third-year offensive lineman Olu Fashanu said he is zeroing in on where an experienced group must place its attention with Geno Smith at quarterback, treating continuity along the line as a way to blunt the disruption that typically follows coaching and coordinator changes.
Fashanu’s perspective is shaped by how many new pieces have already cycled through the Jets’ offensive staff during his time in New York. He is entering his third season with the franchise and, as he put it in reporting from June 17, this will be the third starting quarterback, the third offensive coordinator and the third head coach he has practiced under as a pro.
That context matters for an offensive tackle because the position is not only responsible for physical matchups, it is also responsible for communicating adjustments. Every new scheme brings new rules for where help comes from, how pre-snap identifications are made, and which protections are most likely to be called under different defensive looks. Fashanu’s stated focus suggests he and the rest of the line are trying to turn those concepts into repeatable actions, so the quarterback can get the ball out on time and in the right phases.
Part of the reason Fashanu sounds optimistic about the immediate task is that the Jets’ offensive line is not starting over from scratch. The reporting tied to the June 17 media availability says Fashanu is looking forward to working in a group that returns four starters from 2025, a detail that points to internal familiarity with stances, calls and the baseline expectations for an NFL offensive line unit.
The quarterback element, in particular, is a key part of his framing. Smith’s presence at the position changes how an offensive line must process pressure. Veteran quarterbacks can help defenses by manipulating coverage and timing windows, but they also amplify the cost of missed protections and unclear reads because they can turn subtle breakdowns into quick sacks or disrupted throws.
For Jets fans and evaluators, the offseason-to-training-camp storyline is straightforward: can the line translate its returning core into consistent protection communication while learning what the current staff wants? Fashanu’s comments do not replace preseason games or regular-season film, but they provide a window into how the Jets are approaching the practical work of building trust between the line and the quarterback before the schedule hardens.
The larger takeaway is that offensive line continuity is often the first domino in any quarterback transition. When the protection rules are understood and the cadence is consistent, a quarterback is more likely to function inside the scheme rather than outside it. The Jets will still face new looks from opponents, but Fashanu’s emphasis on focusing the line’s attention around Smith suggests New York believes it can use the experience returning on the roster to stabilize the offense.
If you want to track this storyline moving forward, watch how the Jets’ offensive line responds to late-game pressure patterns and communication checks, not just how it runs the ball in open periods. The cleanest indicator will be whether assignments hold together across multiple defensive fronts, since that is where preseason success tends to be decided for teams with an evolving coaching environment.
