The Hawkeyes’ long-tenured leader is highlighted in On3’s Big Ten head coach rankings as he enters his 28th season at the helm.
On3’s Big Ten head coach rankings put Iowa’s Kirk Ferentz among the conference’s elite group of head coaches, reinforcing how strongly his long run has remained a benchmark in college football. The ranking discussion centers on Ferentz’s sustained coaching presence and what it indicates for the programs he has led, particularly as Iowa prepares for another season under a coach who has become synonymous with stability in the Big Ten.
Ferentz is widely described as the “dean of college football,” and On3’s evaluation frames him as an example of sustained excellence rather than a short-cycle success story. According to the report, he is entering his 28th season as the head coach at Iowa, a tenure that is unusual in an era where many high-profile coaching stints end sooner.
That longevity matters in a conference built on constant competitive churn. In the Big Ten, staffs and leadership groups frequently turn over, and the ability to keep a program’s identity intact year after year can be as valuable as any single season highlight. On3’s decision to place Ferentz in the top tier of its head coach list is essentially an acknowledgment of institutional continuity as a coaching strength.
Iowa’s program has often been understood through the lens of process and preparation, and a coach with a multi-decade horizon can shape everything from development to recruiting emphasis to in-game decision making. On3’s rankings reflect the idea that Ferentz’s coaching impact is not measured only by a single campaign, but by how consistently the Hawkeyes have operated under his leadership.
Still, rankings are inherently comparative and depend on the criteria used by the outlet. Without official conference or NCAA evaluation metrics, readers should treat head coach lists as informed opinions rather than definitive standings. The On3 ranking offers a perspective on how Ferentz stacks up across the Big Ten, not a promise of outcomes for the season ahead.
For Iowa fans, the broader takeaway is that the national conversation around Ferentz remains anchored to endurance and experience. For the Big Ten, it is a reminder that amid coaching turnover, one of the league’s defining leadership styles continues to be represented by the same head coach.
What to watch next is how Iowa’s roster and on-field results align with the expectations that typically follow a coaching reputation like Ferentz’s. On3’s list may not change what happens on Saturdays, but it can shape how the Hawkeyes are viewed as they enter the next phase of Ferentz’s 28th season.
