Oregon’s second official-visit weekend ends without linebacker Drew Williams, who commits to Kentucky

Oregon’s 2027 recruiting weekend in Eugene carried a familiar hope, a late-May official visit that the Ducks believed could turn into a commitment. Instead, linebacker Drew Williams is now off the board, with On3 reporting that the 6-foot-1, 205-pound prospect committed to Kentucky after leaving Lexington as a Wildcat.

Williams’ decision did not come as a total surprise for Kentucky’s staff. According to On3, Kentucky offered him in January and treated him as a priority. On3 also reported that Williams’ official visit ended with him choosing the Wildcats over Oregon, Florida, and LSU, among other options, after a recruitment that produced a reported 40 scholarship offers.

Part of what stood out in Kentucky’s pitch, per On3, was continuity on the defensive side. Williams pointed to defensive coordinator Jay Bateman as a key figure in the process and described the relationship as one that grew throughout multiple trips. On3 also tied the commitment to Kentucky head coach Will Stein’s direction, emphasizing culture and development as central themes of the final push.

Oregon, meanwhile, has been trying to build momentum at linebacker during this recruiting cycle. Yahoo Sports reported that the Ducks were wrapping up their second official-visit weekend on Sunday, and that they had already added four-star linebacker Toa Satele after the first wave of official visits. On3’s account of that Satele commitment described Oregon’s staff hosting him for an official visit before he chose the Ducks over Texas, Cal, and Notre Dame.

Satele’s pledge did not prevent the Ducks from missing on Williams, but it does help explain why linebacker recruiting remains an urgency rather than a single-target exercise. On3’s coverage of Satele framed the linebacker position as one of Oregon’s biggest needs in the 2027 class, which suggests the Ducks are working to stack depth and versatility rather than rely on one outcome.

For Kentucky, Williams’ commitment is another example of the Wildcats pressing into the linebacker market during coach Will Stein’s early era. The fit matters in a conference built around pace and physical play, and Kentucky now gets a prospect who, at minimum on recruiting profiles, is being evaluated for speed, closing ability, and range in coverage and pursuit.

For Oregon, the immediate takeaway is simple. After hosting Williams, the Ducks still need to find a linebacker who wants to sign in Eugene. The bigger picture is that official-visit weekends can be won and lost quickly, so the Ducks will likely lean harder into their remaining targets and follow-up recruiting conversations as the calendar approaches the next rounds of commitments and official visits.
