Oriental Land names Disney Imagination, the first Disney Cruise ship slated to sail from Japan in spring 2029
The Disney Cruise Line Japan debut is anchored by a new ship in the Wish class, scheduled to depart Tokyo with Ariel and Sebastian as part of its signature stern design.
Oriental Land Co. has revealed the name of the first Disney Cruise Line ship built to sail from Japan: Disney Imagination. The announcement, made in Tokyo, sets a timetable for the new Disney-branded cruise venture operated by Oriental Land and is designed to extend Disney’s parks-and-resorts fan base into a new travel category for Japanese guests.
The ship is scheduled to depart from Tokyo in spring 2029 and is described by Disney as the inaugural vessel of Disney Cruise Line Japan. Disney said the new operation is Disney-branded but run by Oriental Land Cruise Co., the company behind Tokyo Disney Resort under a license arrangement with Disney, with both sides positioning the cruise launch as a continuation of their long-running partnership.
At a ceremony to announce the milestone, Oriental Land’s Chairperson and CEO Yumiko Takano was joined by Ryotaro Shiiba, President of Oriental Land Cruise Co., and by Disney leaders including Natacha Rafalski, President of Disney Signature Experiences. Tracy Wilson, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Disney Cruise Line Operations, was also present as the partners celebrated the ship’s naming and the planned Japan launch.
Disney’s release framed the ship’s theme around imagination, a through-line it says is central to Disney storytelling. As part of a Disney Cruise Line tradition, Disney Imagination will feature a Disney character on its signature stern, a decorative ship’s rear section meant to serve as a visual centerpiece for branding in port and at sea. Disney said the character will be Ariel from Walt Disney Animation Studios’ The Little Mermaid, accompanied by Sebastian and friends beneath the sea.
Disney also described the stern design concept as playful and interactive. Ariel and Sebastian are set to adorn the ship’s stern as Ariel uses a dinglehopper to draw out the ship’s name, tying the ship’s debut to themes of curiosity, creativity and adventurous spirit that Disney associates with its princess characters.
In addition to the character-based design, the company said the new vessel will be the newest ship in the Wish class. Disney did not, in the announcement, spell out specific Wish-class technical specifications or capacity figures, but it linked the class designation to the entertainment, dining and guest service standards it says define a Disney cruise vacation.
Disney’s comments emphasized both market expansion and guest access. Natacha Rafalski said the naming of Disney Imagination represents a significant milestone for the continued expansion of Disney Cruise Line and for the long-standing relationship with the Oriental Land Group, adding that the company is extending Disney cruising magic to fans in new markets and creating an opportunity for Japanese guests to experience a Disney vacation at sea.
The announcement also set expectations for what comes next. Disney said additional details about onboard experiences and future itineraries for Disney Imagination will be released at a later date, leaving the schedule, length of voyages and specific port plans for later disclosure.
For travelers and industry watchers, the main near-term question is how quickly Disney Cruise Line Japan will turn naming into public bookings, pricing and itinerary visibility. The company has not, in the announcement, provided dates beyond the spring 2029 departure window or offered specifics on how the ship’s features will differ from other Disney Cruise Line vessels, which means the next phase of marketing will likely focus on itineraries, onboard programming and partner communications with Oriental Land’s Japanese audience.
Why It Matters
- The Japan-first start of Disney Cruise Line Japan highlights Disney’s push to translate its audience from theme parks into a broader travel product category.
- A new dedicated ship under the Wish class indicates a longer-term commitment to cruise growth rather than short-term seasonal experiments, though booking details are still pending.
- The venture depends on the Oriental Land relationship, illustrating how Disney’s licensing model can expand into operating new guest experiences in Japan.
- The character-forward branding strategy on the ship’s stern underscores Disney’s approach to merchandise-like visual identity that can drive awareness in ports and media coverage.
