Moves like these are especially common late in the season as teams balance three needs: the active roster’s limits, the day-to-day demand for relief pitching and matchup coverage, and the development value of giving a specific starter a clear path to work. By optioning Nunez and elevating Povich, Baltimore is effectively combining roster churn with an immediate on-field role for its recalled pitcher.

There is, however, an important caveat to keep in mind with any DFA-related item: once a player is designated for assignment, the path forward can vary.
