Trevor Rogers delivered a quality start, and the Orioles turned a go-ahead moment into a tight finish as Yennier Cano held on after a nearly messy ninth.
The Orioles took a 3-2 decision on Saturday night in Los Angeles, but it came with the kind of late-inning tension that tests a bullpen and a lineup alike. After Trevor Rogers set the tone on the mound, Baltimore’s offense found just enough to build a slim lead. The game swung again with a clutch extra-base hit from Blaze Alexander, and even then, the Orioles were forced to endure worrying moments late.
Rogers, a starting pitcher for Baltimore, was the foundation of the win. He gave the Orioles the chance to control the tempo long enough for their bats to deliver in the key stretches, and once the team was in front, the margin stayed narrow. In a one-run or two-run game, the starting pitching matters even more because there is less room for error in the middle and late innings.
Alexander’s role proved pivotal. Yahoo Sports described the Orioles’ decisive hit as a double off Alexander’s bat, a timely production that helped put runs on the board when the score could not drift too far in either direction. The credit for a tight win often falls on the late swings, and this one gave Baltimore breathing room even as the Dodgers pushed back.
In the ninth inning, the Orioles nearly let the situation slip away. According to Yahoo Sports, Baltimore “almost blew it,” creating a late stress test for the closer. Yennier Cano then stepped in to finish the job, delivering the kind of late, high-leverage execution that turns a one-run lead into a win.
For Cano, the outing worked as the intended backstop after the game had tightened up. Late innings can compress at-bats into a small window where one swing can erase an entire night of work. By standing up when the ninth got uncomfortable, Cano preserved the result and kept the Orioles from turning a manageable game into a costly one.
The bigger takeaway is how the Orioles managed their win profile across phases. Rogers provided stability to set the table, Alexander’s hit helped create separation, and Cano cleaned up when the margin threatened to disappear. Baseball games do not always cooperate with clean narratives, and this one followed the most familiar pattern of close contests: a quality start, one meaningful offensive burst, and a bullpen finish that separates a hard-fought win from a late collapse.
