San Diego cleared space on its 40-man roster by designating reliever Ty Adcock and releasing starter Marco Gonzales, moves tied to an MLB roster call-up for catcher Blake Hunt.
The San Diego Padres have made two roster-related transactions that thin their depth while reshaping the make-up of their 40-man group. According to the MLB transaction report carried by MLB Trade Rumors, the Padres outrighted reliever Ty Adcock after he was designated for assignment, and they also released starter Marco Gonzales from his minor league contract.
In practical terms, an outright is the next step after a club removes a player from the 40-man roster and runs him through the waiver process. If a player clears waivers, the team can assign him to a minor-league system without keeping him on the major-league roster. MLB Trade Rumors reported that San Diego completed that process with Adcock on June 18.
The impetus for the roster shuffle, per the same report, was a separate roster decision involving catcher Blake Hunt. MLB Trade Rumors said San Diego needed to select Hunt onto the MLB team, which pushed Adcock off the 40-man roster in the first place. Catcher call-ups can carry special roster weight because they affect both playing time and the team’s flexibility with bullpen usage and game-day matchups.
While the move affects Adcock’s immediate standing with the Padres, the release of Gonzales is a different type of reset. MLB Trade Rumors reported that San Diego released Gonzales from his minor league contract the day before the Adcock transaction. Releasing a player from a minor league deal generally indicates that the organization does not see a path back to the majors through that contract term, and it opens the door for the player to pursue opportunities elsewhere.
For the Padres, these decisions are about managing a roster that must balance MLB readiness with long-term depth. The reported sequence also underscores how quickly roster needs can cascade. A single addition, such as bringing a catcher like Hunt onto the MLB roster, can force a chain of DFA and waiver activity for other fringe pieces.
Adcock’s outright and Gonzales’ release both reduce the Padres’ internal options in their current system, at least temporarily. The team will have to cover innings and innings-prep duties with the bullpen and the broader minor-league depth that remains on hand. In the short window of an MLB season, roster management like this often reflects how organizations prioritize players they believe can contribute at the highest level right now.
What to watch next is whether either player lands with another organization after these moves, and how the Padres use their newly selected catcher at the major-league level. If Hunt’s promotion is tied to a specific stretch of games, San Diego’s day-to-day pitching usage and defensive planning may offer further clues about how the club views its immediate roster needs. (Because this report is based on transaction reporting rather than a full official team explanation, the details of internal reasoning should be treated as organizational context rather than confirmed strategy.)
Overall, the reported transactions fit a common midseason pattern: teams protect their roster flexibility, add a player they want on the MLB club, and move others out of the 40-man picture when those needs collide. For San Diego, the key question is whether Hunt’s selection provides the organizational stability they want behind the plate, while their remaining depth holds up enough to keep the bullpen and rotation plans intact through the next series stretch.
