Panthers’ Turk Wharton cleared after neck surgery, set for increased role vs. Eagles
Carolina defensive tackle Tershawn “Turk” Wharton says he’s healthy and fully cleared after undergoing ACDF surgery for a herniated disc, and the team is weighing his workload as he returns to action.
The Panthers defensive tackle Tershawn Wharton is healthy, relieved, and ready to play after returning from neck surgery and completing the next step in Carolina’s return-to-play process.
Wharton described how symptoms started during OTAs last spring, when he felt tingling and numbness that could travel through his hands and arms, prompting him to report the issue to team medical staff and undergo scans.
Imaging showed a herniated disc, and Wharton underwent ACDF surgery, with vertebrae C4 and C5 fused, followed by a rehabilitation period before he could enter the Panthers’ formal return-to-play program.
After about 12 weeks of progress, his doctors told him he was at roughly 85 percent growth, and he said a CT scan on Monday cleared him to return to 100 percent, clearing him to practice this week.
Carolina will now monitor how his body responds to practice as it decides what comes next in advance of Sunday’s Week 6 game against the Philadelphia Eagles, and defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero said Wharton will still have an acclimation period such as managed workload and snap pacing.
Wharton framed his next phase simply, saying his expectation is to play and that, while football shape comes from playing, he is approaching each snap with the goal of dominance.
Why It Matters
- Carolina’s defensive line rotation changes materially if Wharton can ramp from practice into a full-week role, particularly given his status as a veteran contributor.
- Even when cleared medically, teams typically manage workload after extended time away from live reps, which can affect how Carolina’s defensive snaps are distributed.
- The Week 6 matchup vs. Philadelphia becomes a near-term test of Wharton’s ability to handle regular game intensity after a long layoff and rehabilitation.
- Wharton’s presence also matters for mentoring and continuity along a defensive front that the team described as young and still developing.
