Park DuValle Community Health Centers opens Park DuValle Farmers Market and wellness center to improve access to fresh food

Park DuValle Community Health Centers officially opened the Park DuValle Farmers Market on Thursday, establishing a new retail and community space on Wilson Avenue for West Louisville residents to buy fresh produce and connect with health-related resources. The project is being positioned as a practical response to food access challenges in the surrounding area, with community partners describing it as both a market and a hub intended to support health needs beyond the clinic.

According to WLKY, the facility is more than a traditional farmers market. Community leaders said the center is designed to bring together an indoor and outdoor farmers market, a food pantry, and a training kitchen where residents can learn healthier cooking skills. Organizers also described a wellness center as planned for the future, extending the site’s services over time.

WLKY reported that the center opened with the goal of making healthy food more accessible locally, instead of requiring residents to travel farther for fresh vegetables and fruit. Longtime resident Katisha Mclin said the new market would reduce the need to “go way out” to get groceries and that the location is on a bus line and is walkable for nearby residents.

Park DuValle Community Health Centers’ leadership said the market was created to serve multiple vendors and community needs under one roof. WLKY quoted Charles Burton, director of operations for the Park DuValle Farmers Market & Wellness Center, saying the project is intended to declare that West Louisville should have every opportunity to live healthy, eat healthy, and flourish. Dr. Swannie Jett, the center’s chief executive officer, also said the vision includes enough space to bring in multiple vendors so that residents have varied options.

The Courier-Journal reported the initiative follows years of planning and renovation work, including the purchase and conversion of a building. It said the center opened in July at 3044 Wilson Avenue and is described as the newest cornerstone in the nonprofit’s Food Is Medicine initiative, an effort intended to increase food equity and wellness opportunities in West Louisville’s “food deserts.”

The Courier-Journal also reported additional details about operations and amenities. It said the market is expected to be open three to four days a week for at least four hours a day, and it highlighted the presence of an indoor and outdoor farmers market, a food pantry, a training kitchen, and a wellness space. The paper quoted Jett describing the center as addressing health beyond clinic walls, and said the indoor market and associated commercial kitchen would be a distinctive feature in the region.

Officials and partners said the opening of the farmers market is designed to make fresh food easier to access while strengthening the community’s connection to health resources. With the market now operating at the new location, residents can begin using the market and onsite resources while the center continues to develop additional wellness programming planned for later phases.
