The Denver cornerback expects a different kind of challenge this offseason as Jaylen Waddle’s range and pace change the way opponents can attack and test coverage.
Pat Surtain II says the Denver Broncos’ offseason practices have taken on a different feel on defense after the arrival of wide receiver Jaylen Waddle. Speaking to reporters, Surtain described a shift in how Denver is preparing, not because the scheme has to change from the ground up, but because matchups and timing against one of the league’s faster-separating receivers are fundamentally different than what a defense has been training for previously.
Surtain, Denver’s cornerstone cornerback, is typically tasked with handling a team’s most consistent perimeter threat. When a receiver brings both straight-line speed and the ability to threaten the ball quickly after the snap, it changes the coverage math for defensive backs. Surtain’s comments pointed to that reality, emphasizing that he is lining up against an offensive look that plays faster and forces defenders to be sharper earlier in the rep.
Waddle’s presence matters most because it pressures coverage at multiple stages. With elite speed, routes do not have to be perfectly run to be dangerous, and quarterbacks can take earlier chances because the window to throw is often shorter. For the cornerback, that typically means tighter footwork and more disciplined spacing in coverage, since a small hesitation can be punished by acceleration from the receiver and additional yards after the catch.
From the Broncos’ defensive standpoint, the challenge extends beyond the cornerback one-on-one moment. Waddle’s speed can affect how safeties help, how linebackers react to horizontal stretches, and how defensive backs anticipate on-screen and underneath routes. In practice, those knock-on effects show up as altered cadence in the secondary, more attention to route stems and leverage, and a need for receivers and defenders to synchronize their timing so that coverage concepts are tested realistically.
Surtain’s framing also underscores how offseason preparation is not only about installing a defense, but about simulating the variety of threats a team can face during the regular season. Even without major changes to personnel on defense, adding a dynamic skill player to the practice offense can accelerate learning for the secondary. It can also reveal where technique breaks down, especially in zones that require defenders to stay square while the threat is moving into space.
For Denver, the next step is turning those practice lessons into repeatable execution. The immediate watch item is how Surtain and the rest of the defensive backfield handle Waddle-specific scenarios, including whether coverage can hold up when the receiver forces the ball to be delivered faster than typical route timing. Longer term, the Broncos will look for whether these offseason matchup upgrades translate into more consistent pass breakups and fewer blown assignments when the pace rises against opponents with similar speed profiles.
