Patriots Sign First-Round Tackle Caleb Lomu, Terms Kept Private

Patriots scouting staff had framed Lomu as an immediate-minded pass protector with room to grow as a run blocker. In the Patriots’ draft analysis of the pick, the team described a prospect whose pass-protection traits stood out, noting that Lomu did not allow a sack while showing a 2.3% pressure rate across 359 pass-blocking snaps in 2025. The organization also highlighted his quickness from his stance and his ability to mirror against edge rushers.

That same evaluation pointed to development work he must do at the next level. As a run blocker, the Patriots said he has the athletic length to work into the line and climb to the second level, but that he would need to add mass and improve play strength to reach his ceiling. The team also acknowledged the jump in assignment quality for a tackle transitioning from Utah’s run-option and play-action heavy looks to more pro-style drop-back pass protection.

There was also the question of where Lomu fits on the Patriots’ line. The Patriots’ analysis said he primarily played left tackle in college, with only 32 snaps at right tackle, though staff credited his right-side reps at the Pro Day. The organization suggested he could start his NFL stretch as a top backup to established tackles, while a longer-term plan could involve him eventually taking on bigger responsibilities as veterans age.
