Sergei Murashov’s 2025-26 season offered a clear picture of where the Pittsburgh Penguins see their goaltending pipeline heading. The Penguins did not get a long runway of consistent NHL volume from the 22-year-old, but they did get a chance to see how his game translates at the highest level over five appearances, alongside a more substantial workload in the AHL.

Murashov, a right-catching goaltender, entered the 2025-26 campaign as a relatively recent draft selection. He was drafted by Pittsburgh in 2022 in the fourth round, 118th overall. Born April 1, 2004, he stands 6-foot-2 and weighs 185 pounds, and the organization has continued to develop him with an emphasis on netminding consistency rather than rapid exposure.

At the NHL level, Murashov appeared in five games and produced an overall line of 1-1-2 with a.897 save percentage and a 2.56 goals-against average. Those numbers are not meant to stand alone, particularly because the sample size is small, but they do show that he was trusted to handle NHL-caliber shot volume when called up.

The more complete evaluation came in the AHL, where Murashov played 38 games. He posted a 24-9-8 record with a.919 save percentage and a 2.20 goals-against average. In practical terms, those results suggest that, over a larger body of work, Murashov’s game held up under repeated starts, traffic, and defensive-system demands that tend to fluctuate from week to week.

Contract status is also part of the story for Pittsburgh’s front office planning. According to the season review, Murashov signed through the 2026-27 season and carried a $936,000 cap hit before reaching restricted free agency ahead of his age-23 season. That structure matters because it can influence how aggressively the organization tries to keep developing him in the AHL while also preparing for scenarios where NHL minutes open up due to injuries, performance changes, or broader roster needs.

What makes Murashov’s 2025-26 profile useful for the Penguins is the contrast between the NHL and AHL environments. The NHL line indicates he can be placed in net without collapsing statistically in a brief look, while the AHL line indicates he can sustain the workload needed to sharpen positioning, rebound control, and consistency across a typical minor-league season length.

Going forward, the question for Pittsburgh is not whether Murashov can handle one or two NHL stretches, but whether the organization can find a rhythm that turns those short top-level appearances into a clearer developmental arc.
